NOVEMBER 10: First cover story outside Ireland / Live recording to an EP / 1989, a very important year to the world / Superman and his new wife / Edge´s "Sunday Bloody Sunday" / Second Best Of is #2 / Only U2 will survive, says Simply Red´s Mick Hucknell / 120th VERTIGO show / Singled out: Bono credits The Edge as the man behind their third retrospective collection, U218 Singles, released on November 18 !

"U2´s first cover story outside Ireland" - november 10, 1979. U2 is featured on the cover of Record Mirror, a British music magazine. It's their first cover story outside of Ireland. Bono tells Chris Westwood: "I want people in London to see and hear the band. I want to replace the bands in the charts now, because I think we're better."

"The Unforgettable Fire" tour - november 10, 1984 - Manchester / England - Apollo Theatre. U2 are discussing releasing an EP (Unforgettable Fire sessions combined with some live recordings from the tour) to generate more support for the tour. These two shows, as well as the next three upcoming dates in Birmingham, London, and Dortmund, Germany are also recorded.

"LoveTown" tour - november 10, 1989 - U2 perform in Auckland, New Zealand at Western Spring Stadium. The first show is actually the second show to be put on sale. When the 60,000 tickets for the 11th sell fast, a second gig is added--however, it only sells 20,000 tickets. The smaller crowd is more to U2's liking, and results in a better show. "One Tree Hill" is heavy with sentiment, and is dedicated to Greg Carroll. Towards the end of the show, Bono also comments on the developments in Communist countries(China and the Eastern Bloc), where anti-Government/Pro-democracy protests have been in the news for weeks. "I'd like to dedicate this song to the brave ones who have brough such great change to East Germany in the last few days, and for the brave ones who've lost their lives trying to bring about great change in China. The Eighties have been full of a lot of bullshit. But when they're writing the history books, 1989 is going to be a very important year for the world..."Support is B.B. King.

"ZOOTV - Broadcast" tour - november 10, 1992 - U2 perform in San Diego, California at Jack Murphy Stadium. The venue only sells 33,575 seats out of 55,000. During "Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World", Bono spots a girl in a wedding dress. "Is this a fancy dress, or did you really tie the knot here?" The girl, who was married earlier in the day is accompanied on stage by her new husband. "Superman and his new wife!" Bono exclaims to the cheering crowd. "Well...all I can say is the people of San Diego pronounce you man and wife!" Bono comments on the US Presidential elections a few days earlier, "You've got four years to see if you can turn the whole world around. I hope Bill Clinton is what he says is is, because if he's not we're all f---ed, let's face it..." Support is B.P. Fallon, "The Sugarcubes", and "Public Enemy".

"POPMart' tour - november 10, 1997 - U2 perform in Tampa, Florida Houlihans Stadium. Crowd is only 20.232 people. The Edge performed a solo version of "Sunday, Bloody Sunday," a song he said they hadn't performed in a while, until a recent show in Sarajevo.

"Best Of opens at number 2 in UK charts" - november 10, 2002. U2's The Best of 1990-2000 debuts at No. 2 on the UK album charts, behind One Love by the group Blue.

Only U2 will survive, says Simply Red´s Mick Hucknell - November 10, 2005 - HUCKNELL: 'COLDPLAY IS FOR INSOMNIACS' - SIMPLY RED frontman MICK HUCKNELL has hit out at pop sensations COLDPLAY, dubbing their music only suitable "for insomniacs". The STARS hitmaker insists out of the current generation of chart-toppers, only U2 will survive - blaming record labels for neglecting talent. He says, "U2 should still be there (in 20 years time), but not many others. The problem is the major labels are too busy pleasing shareholders, which means rapid returns. There's little investment in long-term careers and there are no major icons. Coldplay music is for insomniacs." contactmusic

70,000 fans ... Bring on the rain, it's what we need,'' he sang. ... There is no doubt that the 70,000 fans had a deep and enduring connection to U2's music, sending their voices soaring to the heavens during classic anthems, One, Pride (In the Name of Love) and With or Without You - during which he pulled a girl on stage and serenaded her. ... Of course there was a strong message delivered with the music, with Bono asking for Australia's continued support for the Make Poverty History campaign, urging Sydney to remain a peaceful multi-cultural city. U2 perform again tonight and Monday at Telstra stadium, with limited tickets available.
... Pam finally got to meet her idol Bono, telling him he is ‘a ray of light in a dark world’. She gave him a package containing a note outlining her RTA woes, along with the RTA’s route map. ... northernstar

Singled out: Bono credits The Edge as the man behind their third retrospective collection, U218 Singles, released on November 18 - November 10, 2006 - And admits he cannot stand to listen back to the band's early work. "I had nothing to do with it. I can't stand it. I can't stand listening to our music, I break out in a rash. It's all the coulda, shouldas. And in the'80s, I think I sang like a girl. A girl with a mullet," he laughs. "One of the reasons why we did the book (U2 By U2) and the album is that if we're caught in retrospection, it seems like a good moment to stop for a while. "We have a younger audience that has come through because of the last two albums. And (this) makes it easy for people to get it all in one. "Edge, when we did the decade collections, actually made me sit down and listen to the running order. "As gauche and as raw and as unfinished as a lot of the lyrics felt to me, there was an ecstatic quality to the early U2 that's very rare. "I can now understand why somebody wouldn't like it but I understand more why other people thought it was great. The hardest thing to contrive is joy; it's actually impossible and there's pure joy in there in places. And there's also a little boy screaming his head off, or a little girl." U2 perform at Telstra Stadium tonight, Saturday and Monday, with limited tickets still available. U218 Singles is released on November 18.
