25th 'VERTIGO' show - may 22, 2005 - Philadelphia, Wachovia Center - Edge was awesome / like in romance movies (Bono and the girl) / tatoo guy! 'We've had a great past in this band but the thing that excites us most is the future,' raps Bono as the song closes. 'What it holds in science and technology and the idea that the world can change shape and be better. We believe God is inspiring scientists and doctors and nurses, we met someone today at the airport and this is for the little baby she is carrying - this is Miracle Drug.'....Edge, meanwhile, is flailing his guitar to a thrilling climax....Human rights is still the theme as Pride In The Name of Love gives way to Where The Streets Have No Name and One - this time, as every night, the human rights in question are those of the people of Africa, living in poverty. Edge was awesome! A young girl, whose parents brought her to the show for her 16TH birthday. Bono iater pulled her up on stage as she danced to Mysterious Ways and he then sang With or Without You to her and had her run around the circle to his waiting arms on the other side, he then sat her down and completed the song having her rise as she sang the end of it with him. Like in romance movies! Earlier in the show he got tatoo guy on stage. Later he took someone's camera and took photos for them. Gloria ..In the solo part, Bono introduced Edge as "The" (his first name, right??)...". Some photos on: U2tours.com

Attempts to fly the trucks' contents in do not materialize, and the show is rescheduled for the 21st. At the first night's show, Fatima Mansions are booed, and at one point the "40" chant of "How long to sing this song," is loud enough to drown out the audio system. U2's performance is greeted wildly. Before "One", Bono refers to the 1990 World Cup Quarter-Final in which Italy beat Ireland 1-nil. "We forgive you that you were lucky," Bono jokes. During "Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World", a girl has already climbed up onto the barrier between the crowd and stage -- Bono pulls her up, opens the bottle of champagne and sprays the nearby crowd. She whispers something to him, and Bono walks her over to the main stage and explains to The Edge, "It's you she loves..." Together the two of them alternate singing, "Woman, I will..." to her, as they argue over who will end up with her tonight. Support is B.P. Fallon and "Fatima Mansions".

Bono urges action on corruption in Africa - may 21, 2006 - Nigeria - The west's new mood of generosity towards Africa will come to an abrupt and early end unless political leaders in the world's poorest continent are ruthless in eliminating corruption, the rock star Bono said last night. ... "It's a critical moment", Bono said. "There's some goodwill. There's a window of opportunity. But it could close if corruption is not tackled." ... "To counter that argument, I say that those were loans in the past not grants. It was for cold war reasons that they were made. It was cold war reasoning that meant billions got lost in Swiss bank accounts. Judgement of character came second to national interest," Bono said. ... "Donors are becoming more careful who they give increased aid flows to," Bono said. "That kind of auditing is necessary because transparency demands it. We have to accept that a lot of the aid in the past has done more harm than good."

However, because one of the tour trucks has broken down in Barcelona, and attempts to fly the contents in fail, the show is cancelled. A crowd of 12,500 wait in the rain outside the venue, and at 8 pm, one hour after the doors were scheduled to be opened, rumours circulate in the crowd that the show will not go on. Riot police are called in to stand between the crowd and the venue doors. An official from the venue finally announces that the concert has been rescheduled, and the crowd leave without incident.

Bono In Africa With US Treasury Secretary - may 20, 2002 - For two weeks Bono travels to four African countries with the US Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill. The self-described 'odd couple' of international aid diplomacy flew first to Ghana before travelling on to South Africa, Uganda and Ethiopia. The plan, hatched during meetings in Washington, is to draw attention to the needs of the poverty-stricken region, using their different positions and celebrity to spark interest in a topic that each feels much of the world ignores. U2.com

Bono in Nigeria: Travelling star keeps up pressure on aid and debt for Africa - may 20, 2006 - ...The U2 singer arrives today in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, having already visited Lesotho, Rwanda and Tanzania to highlight the benefits of his Product RED campaign. But the tour was almost aborted before it began. Fresh from his day in the editor's chair on Monday, Bono flew to Johannesburg, but he was initially barred from entering South Africa. The reason: so extensively has he been travelling the world to whip up support for debt relief, increased aid and fairer trade terms for Africa, he didn't have a blank page left in his passport. A quick call to Nelson Mandela solved the problem, and the rock star and his entourage were waved through. ... "When people work, and they can buy their own food and take themselves to the clinics, then it means they are doing it themselves and they are not just receiving food parcels." ... "The reason Lesotho has not received debt cancellation is because it has been disciplined, it has been punished for the fact that it has been a good borrower in the past and has paid back its debts." ... "They welcomed us with open arms ... shook our hands and their eyes misted up at the right place. When we left town, they slashed the budget." ... Independent

Traffic in and around the city is tied up both days, as U2 is permitted to close streets while the video is shot. Local residents are angered by the delays. The video is a send-up of 50s and 60s sci-fi movies and beatnik poet Alan Ginsburg appears at the end of the video pushing a shopping cart with a spotlight in the basket. It is one of Ginsburg's final public appearances, as he would die later in 1997.

"Yes" - may 19, 1998. U2 performs at YES concert for Good Friday Agreement. U2 participates in a "YES" concert in Belfast to draw support for the national vote on the Good Friday/Northern Ireland Peace Agreement four days later. Northern band Ash also plays at the show at Waterfront Hall in front of about 2,000 young people, and Ash's lead singer comes on-stage with U2 at one point. More importantly, U2 brings on stage David Trimble and John Hume, leaders of the traditionally opposing Ulster Unionist Party and Social Democratic and Labour Party, respectively. The political leaders stand on each side of Bono as he raises their arms together in a show of unity. Four days later, the Peace Agreement is approved overwhelmingly by voters in both the North and South.

"Bono interviews Gorbachev" - may 19, 2003 - Bono is in Turin, Italy, for the World Political Forum -- an event organized in part by Mikhail Gorbachev. Bono implores media not to 'dehumanise' Africa - may 19, 2006 - U2 rocker Bono has made a fervent plea to the world's media not to 'dehumanise' Africa by always displaying its people as 'supplicants'....now needed to show the African people not as 'supplicants' but as 'noble, entrepreneurial, very handsome, beautiful, smart' people. "The thing I'm learning is breaking with cliches. We see this pattern of Africans displayed as supplicants. We need to start portraying Africans as noble, entrepreneurial, very handsome, beautiful, smart. Break the cliches. As people dehumanise African people it's very easy to turn away from them," Ratethemusic quoted him, as saying.

MAY 18: text images in Spanish / 'Staring at the Sun' / Bono stumps on Capitol Hill for AIDS funding / 23rd VERTIGO show / In Rwanda, U2's Bono denounces 'dehumanization' of Africans!

23rd 'VERTIGO' show - may 18, 2005 - E. Rutherford, NJ - Continental Airlines Arena - Kings of Leon - premiere of 'ISHFWILF' played with The Bank Robbers (Edge plays an acoustic) / Edge´s killer version of ABOY / Elvis Costello, Sammy Hagar and Joe McEnroe were in the audience / "Bad-40" finished the show! Bono sings a bit of 'Pump It Up' for Elvis Costello, who is in the building tonight. 'I Still Haven't Found...' is performed with a local band, The Bank Robbers, on stage. Members of that band borrow U2's instruments to perform the song, though the drummer uses Larry's tom from 'Love and Peace...", not the main drum kit. Additional celebrity sightings: Sammy Hagar, John McEnroe. Elevation - It was refreshing to see Larry sing along w/o a mic, just singing and enjoying himself. Gloria - Bono said "this song is off of out first album, no, wait, our second album". The Ocean - Lyrics were changed to incorporate "The Jersey Shore" and "The Atlantic Ocean"...Miracle Drug - dedicated to a friend of the bands' sick infant. Bono also praised doctors and nurses (especially nurses because they don't get paid enough). Running to Stand Still - Was suprisingly georgous, complete w/ Edge on piano and Bono w/ harmonica. The Fly - Edge went f---ng bananas in this song. He was dancing and just ripping the guitar to shreads. It sounded like an angry man letting out all of his frustrations through musical notes. Mysterious Ways (Mysterious Ways, Bono changed the line towards the end of the song "She Moves w/ it" and changed it to "He's Handsome"....as he was huggin Adam Clayton) - great crowd reaction. Bono brought up a girl to dance. All Beacsue of You - AWESOME live. Edge is a madman. He has never sounded better. Killer version. ...ISHFWILF - Bono brought up 3 YOUNG guys (maybe early 20s), to play a song w/ them. Turns out to be ISHFWILF. These guys sung into same mic w/ Bono, playing distorted guitar version, hamming it up w/ the crowd. They called themselves the Bank Robbers. Larry went to a much quicker pace to keep up w/ them and the song turned into a punk version The Bank Robbers didn't want to leave the stage. It was quite a scene. Edge is in his prime. He is loving being out there, he's dancing, and is playing the guitar like a man possessed. Adam's smile never left his face. Larry was singing along, playing keboards etc. Bank Robbers say about the show here. Some photos on Interference

"We see this pattern of Africans displayed as supplicants. We need to start portraying Africans as noble, entrepreneurial, very handsome, beautiful, smart. "Break the cliches," Bono told a crowd at the school in Mayange. "As people dehumanize African people it's very easy to turn away from them."..."I come from a culture where people think that pop stars and rock stars are heroes, which is preposterous," he said. "The hospital workers here should be the heroes." Read more, here

MAY 17: not a Duran Duran concert / Self Aid Festival / from Sydney is released / Edge attends Radiohead / 22nd VERTIGO show / Bono began a new African tour in Lesotho!

"War" tour - may 17, 1983. U2 perform in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at Massey Hall. During the encore, four girls jump on stage and mob Bono. Bono mumbles something about "not being at a Duran Duran concert". Bono dances with two of the girls at a time, and lets them take pictures. Support is "Dream Syndicate".

"Self Aid Festival" - may 17, 1986. U2 play their only European date of 1986 at the Self Aid festival in the RDS Showgrounds, Dublin. With 27 separate acts performing it's the largest Irish musical festival ever. Much controversy is generated when In Dublin magazine runs a highly critical story entitled "The Great Self Aid Farce - Rock Against the People", using a shot of Bono on the cover. The criticism is levelled at the concert organizers who are accused of whoring the unemployed for financial gain. Most acts are limited to 15 minute performances, except the last five: Rory Gallagher, Christy Moore, Elvis Costello(and The Attractions), Chris Deburgh and the headliner U2. U2 make their entrance while The Edge thrills the crowd with an extended guitar solo from Eddie Cochran's "C'Mon Everybody". The band play 4 other songs, "Pride(In the Name of Love)", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Maggie's Farm" and "Bad". During "Maggie's Farm", Bono changes the lyrics to reflect the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl: "Temperature is rising, the fever is high; I can't see the future., when they're screwing up the sky. The water is heavy, and so is my head. I don't live in Chernobyl, instead I live in Sellafield..." "Bad" is the encore for the show, selected by the audience when Bono asks for requests.

"U2 releases Sydney home video" - may 17, 1994. U2 releases a home video version of the Sydney pay-per-view concert taped last November 27th. "Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World" is edited out amongst great speculation -- possibilities suggest the edit allows the concert to fit on one 2-hour VHS tape, or that the female dancer didn't agree to appear in the home release, or that she was underage and drank champagne on stage with Bono.

"Edge catches Radiohead" - may 17, 2003. NME reports that The Edge is in attendance as Radiohead plays a club gig in Dublin tonight.

22nd 'VERTIGO' show - may 17, 2005 - E. Rutherford, NJ - Continental Airlines Arena - Kings of Leon - 8 songs to the encores / "Vertigo" ends after "40" / Bono hugged Edge during the start of the Who-ish blast "All Because of You" (Bono stopped him - he made an announcement that sometimes guitar players are too fast). The band was incredible today. Bono got into it round the time he took the little girl up on the extended stage, and there was no looking back. His comments for Vertigo the second time round were great...something to the effect of..."you know encores are an italian opera thing...and if they like a song, they say encore and you do it again...I think you guys liked this song the first time round...but what do i know? I'm Irish!..."Vertigo! so cool!!!! Bono grabs the spotlight that he uses at the end of 40 and just starts going nuts...another memorable moment: Bono added a short snippet of "please" into BTBS, right before the "johnny comes marching home" part. Such a great way to end what was a very energetic show. Some photos on: Interference

Bono began a new African tour in Lesotho - May 17, 2006 - Bono began a new African tour in Lesotho and will unveil a new initiative to fight Aids in the country's ailing textile industry. "In a small African country, the three issues - debt, aid and trade - come together in an unholy trinity," the U2 frontman said yesterday, as his plane landed in the capital Maseru with a delegation of activists and private sector executives. Bono has billed this as "Measuring Success and Promises Kept" to highlight the progress in the treatment of HIV/Aids in Africa, the search for economic growth and rich nations' pledges to cancel some debts and more than double aid to the continent by 2010...Bono is due to announce a new initiative to fight HIV/Aids in Lesotho's textile and garment industry with US clothing maker Gap Inc. Gap is contributing 50% of its profits from the sale of Gap Red products to a global fund for Aids in Africa and has committed to make some of the Red products in Africa. The Apparel Lesotho Alliance to Fight Aids project will ensure workers have access to free drug therapy. Read more about it, here

The leftmost side of seats in front of the stage are reserved from Alison Hewson, Ann, Aislinn and other VIPs and guests. The Spanish crowd ignore the reserved signs and tape and pour into the area. Security intervenes just as the lights dim and the show starts. It is apparent from the crowd's reaction that the majority have not heard about ZooTV, and are completely speechless upon their first glimpse of the new U2. During the B-stage set, a large amount of water rains down on Bono, who turns angrily and walks over to confront the individual. Bono grabs the audience member's can and throws it angrily on the ground. Bono walks over to the audience expecting to find sympathy, but instead finds people screaming his name. Realizing that the crowd is getting out of hand, the band cut the performance short by two songs. Support is B.P. Fallon and "Fatima Mansions".

Smith. Near the end of the event, Bono recalls the Zoo TV era by calling Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter from the podium, but only gets through to the Senator's answering machine. "Hello, Senator Specter? This is Bono, and I'm here with a few thousand friends and we need to talk to you."

"U2 attend Bill Graham's funeral in Dublin" - may 15, 1996. U2 take part in the funeral of Bill Graham in Dublin. Bono sings Leonard Cohen's "Tower Of Song" and is a pallbearer. Bono, the Edge, Gavin Friday, Niall Stokes, Liam Mackey and John Stephenson carried the coffin to the hearse. As everyone moved outside to the sunshine the undertakers brought out the wreaths, among them a message from Shane MacGowan and Victoria Darke: "Bill - sadly missed, deeply treasured." Another arrangement of white lilies and carnations said: "Dear, darling Bill, Sleep in Peace, I love You, Mum." Mr. Graham was buried at Fingal Cemetery in Balgriffin.

"Edge sings at BB King's club - Bono voices Elvis documentary" - may 15, 1997. The night after a concert in Memphis, U2 hang out at BB King's Blues Club. Club management tell local media that Bono left early due to pain from a sore throat, but Edge sticks around and sings "Stand By Me" with the house band. Earlier in the day, Bono records the narration to an hour-long documentary called "Elvis: From the Waist Up," which will air at a later date on the VH1 cable channel in the U.S.

"Elevation" tour - may 15, 2001 / Chicago, IL - United Center - PJ Harvey. '11 O'Clock Tick Tock' makes its tour debut tonight, but it takes the band two tries to get it right. The song ends quickly as Bono starts forgetting the lyrics. Support is B.P. Fallon and "Fatima Mansions".

"POPMart" tour - may 14, 1997 - Memphis, TN - Liberty Bowl. A tall screened backdrop ran endless, colorful images ranging from a monkey-to-man evolutionary chain and rave dancers to fighter plane animation styled after Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring's distinctive stick people. During Bullet the Blue Sky, 14 huge spotlights shot straight up bulleting the black sky. When the band encored, they emerged from the lemon, which had shed its yellow skin and became a twirling mirror ball. Studio 54? Memphis had Stadium 54. In the night's funniest bit, The Edge - accompanied by a karaoke soundtrack - sang the lyrics to Daydream Believer, which were broadcast in big yellow words on the screen.

21st 'VERTIGO' show - may 14, 2005 - Philadelphia, PA - Wachovia Center - Kings of Leon Edge was on fire / bluesy Bullet solo from Edge! Bono brings two young girls on stage during 'Into the Heart.' Actor Jim Carrey is spotted in the VIP area tonight, and Gavin Friday -- who had come over to help with the recent video shoot in Chicago -- is also in attendance. Edge was totally on fire....Edge's guitar riff right before kicking it into City Of Blinding Lights, as the spotlight is on him only - cool stuff. The bluesy Bullet The Blue Sky solo from Edge was great. Some photos on: U2tours

"Elevation" tour - may 13, 2001 - Chicago, IL - United Center. "Stay (Faraway, So Close)" during which Bono and the Edge pulled a Chicago fan named Jonathan onstage and allowed him to play piano....The group also delivered a gorgeous version of "One" in the final encore and a rollicking "New Year's Day" early in the set that found each member playing as good or better than he ever has. Bono moved from hushed intimacy to maximum bravado, the Edge sounded like a one-man, six-string orchestra, Adam Clayton unfurled his ultra-melodic bass lines, and Larry Mullen Jr. propelled things in his musical, rolling fashion. Edge wears this night, red shirt 7.

"War" tour - may 12, 1983 - Passaic / New Jersey - Capitol Theater - Bono asks the photographers at the front of the stage in the press pit to move up onto and over to the sides of the stage so that the people behind them can move closer to the band. Support is "Dream Syndicate".

"The Joshua Tree" tour - may 12, 1987 - On the second night, The Edge's immediate family is in town, as well as Bono's wife Ali. Bono dedicates "People Get Ready" to The Edge's daughter: "Her first ever rock and roll concert, and that's Edge's little baby girl called Holly, she´s here..." During "40 a girl comes running onstage and embraces Bono. "You see, that´s what happens when your record goes to number 1: you get all the beautiful girls!"

"ZOOTV" tour - may 12, 1992 - Lausanne / Switzerland - Patinoire De Malley - Larry sings part of "Dancing Queen", and the song is performed in it's entirety. The boys had fun, and Adam laughed when he saw that somebody in the crowd had a sign with "We love you Adam" on it. Great night, very hot arena...."Support is B.P. Fallon and "Fatima Mansions".

"POPMart" tour - may 12, 1997 - Dallas / Texas - Cotton Bowl - Bono greeted the crowd. "Texas, it's good to be in a state where size really does matter." Big olive, a giant lemon, a huge golden arch, a massive TV screen (833 square yards of "light-emitting diodes").Edge sings "Daydream Believer"

"Elevation" tour - may 12, 2001 - Chicago / IL - United Center - One of the key songs from that first Chicago performance, "I Will Follow," with The Edge's Excalibur-like guitar slicing through the clouds. During a duet with The Edge on the track, "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)," Bono enlisted a member of the audience to play keyboards. "Keep it simple -- no flowery stuff," Bono commanded, and the rookie did exactly that. For "Mysterious Ways," a svelte audience recruit reprised the belly dancer's performance from the 1992 "Zoo TV" tour, prompting Bono to drop in a snippet of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing," before she disappeared back into the crowd without soliciting so much as a handshake. Bono and The Edge forehead to forehead during a storming "Until the End of the World," donning a "Midnight Cowboy" Stetson and affecting a Ratso Rizzo limp while visiting the underbelly of "New York." On the Spartan stage, with no special effects to hide behind, the merits of U2 once again could be observed and appreciated: the solo-free concision of The Edge's riffs (especially the stutter that ignites "Pride"), the forward motion of Clayton's atomic bass (what would the classic "With or Without You" be without him?), and the no-frills clarity of Mullen's drumming (he owns "Sunday Bloody Sunday").

"Neil Young' concert" - may 12, 2003 - Dublin - Bono and Edge, along with spouses Ali and Morleigh, respectively, attend a Neil Young concert tonight in Dublin.

20th VERTIGO tour - may 12 2005 - Chicago, IL - United Center - Kings of Leon - "Vertigo" opens for the 1st time / "Until The End Of The World" debut / "Bad" ends with some "40" - For the last of four nights in Chicago, and with the film cameras off, U2 throws its setlist in the blender. 'Vertigo' opens a show for the first time. 'All Because of You' and 'Original of the Species' are played in the main set for the 1st time. 'Until the End of the World' makes its Vertigo Tour debut. The show closes with 'Bad', which gets extended with several snippets, finally wrapping up with a bit of '40', the traditional show closer this tour. Bono, Edge and Adam gather around the drum kit as Larry finished his set at the end of the show...that moment right there is why they are the biggest band in the world - when all is said and done, their friendship after all of these years, is bigger than anything else. Some photos on U2-vertigo-tour

MAY 11: John Travolta / Bob Marley dies / fans crushed / up on your feet / satellite with problems / Larry´s "Wild Rover" / Bill Graham (U2´s friend) dies in Ireland.

"Boy" tour - may 11, 1981 - Denver / Colorado - Rainbow Music Hall - The Hall is again sold out, only six weeks after U2's first concert there....Halfway through "Boy/Girl" Bono informs the audience that John Travolta has been asked to play the part of Jim Morrison in a forthcoming film about The Doors. He reminisces about the fil "Saturday Night Fever" and sings a few lines of Chubby Checker´s "Let´s Twist Again" ("Like we did last summer..."). The show is recorded and broadcast by local radio station KEZY.

"Bob Marley dies" - may 11,1981 - Reggae star Bob Marley dies of cancer in a Miami hospital at the age of 36. "Rastaman Vibration" is the highest-charting album by Bob Marley & the Wailers, reaching Billboard's top 10 in 1976.

"War" tour - may 11, 1983 - New York City / New York - Palladium - Bono stops "I Will Follow" to ask the crowd to move back a bit, as the fans in the front were getting crushed. After this concert there is serious discussion that U2 only play all-seat theatres to prevent instances like this nights. Support is "Dream Syndicate".

"The Joshua Tree" tour - may 11, 1987 - East Rutherford / New Jersey - Meadowlands Arena - U2 play five sold-out concerts and in front of 100,000+ fans. These are the last five shows of the first leg of "The Joshua Tree" tour. The first night's show, The Edge has trouble starting "C'mon Everybody", and Bono again adlibs with the crowd, "Well, c'mon everybody, let's get to Meadowlands tonight. Well New Jersey's okay, and I'm going to stay here all night..." The crowd are wild on this night, and when Bono asks them to remain quiet during "Springhill Mining Disaster", he's shocked to see people sitting down. "I've never seen people sitting down at a U2 concert!" he shouts at the audience, "This is amazing! And I'm not sure if I like it! Up on your feet!"

"ZOOTV" tour - may 11, 1992 - Lyon / France - Espace Tony Garnier - Prior to the show, the audience sing "Happy Birthday" to Bono. The usually live ZooTV pictures are from tape tonight (plan B), owing to a sattelite dish problem. Support is B.P. Fallon and "Fatima Mansions".

"ZOOTV - Zooropa" tour" - may 11, 1993 - Rotterdam / Holland - Feyenoord Stadium - During "New Year´s Day" Bono disapears into the First Aid pit at the side of the stage and the cameram has trouble locating him. Larry comes forward to do "Wild Rover", with the crowd nicely filling in hand claps. Queen Beatrix is MacPhisto´s next victm. "Love Is Blindness" has lighters switching on and off in the stadium.

Bill Graham dies" - may 11, 1996 - Hot Press journalist Bill Graham passes away suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Howth, Ireland. It was Graham who first championed the band in Dublin media and who suggested to both the band members and Paul McGuinness that McGuinness manage their career. The band fly back to Dublin from America to attend his funeral (may 15), where Bono performs a moving version of Leonard Cohen's "Tower of Song". Gavin Friday, Simon Carmody, Liam O'Maonlai, Maire Brennan and Martin Hayes are among the many artists who play at the service.

MAY 10: Bono and Jordan / "Out Of Control" / Bono´s 23rd b-day / Bono´s 33rd b-day / Bono´s 41st b-day / Bono´s 45th b-day!

"Bono and Jordan" - may 10 - 1960 Paul David Hewson born in the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin. Twenty-nine years later, his daughter Jordan is also born.

"Out Of Control" - may 10, 1978 - On his 18th birthday, Bono pens "Out Of Control" - A new song which Bono wrote on the morning of may 10, his 18th birthday, is "Out Of Control", an exuberant, energetic song which deals with the realisation that the two major events in life - birth and death - are beyond choice or decision.

"War" - may 10, 1983 - New haven / CT - Woolsey Hall at Yale University. It's Bono's 23rd birthday, and the band is in a good mood. They've set up the first instance of a sattelite stage, or what will be commonly referred to as the "B-stage", in the middle of the audience, in order to bring Bono closer to the audience. Bono is mugged by no fewer than 5 girls during the evening, pausing to take pictures with a group of four of them. Roadie Dennis Sheehan comes onto stage to bring Bono a birthday cake, and the audience sing "Happy Birthday". Support is "Dream Syndicate".

"ZOOTV - Zooropa" tour - may 10, 1993 - Totterdam / Holland - Feyenoord Stadium - Bono celebrates his 33rd birthday onstage at a sold-out gig in the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam. Galway theater group "Macnas" perform an anti-Fascist play before U2 take the stage. Edge does a splendid solo version of "Party Girl" and sings a quick birthday song. During "Trying To Throw Your Arms", two girls from the Dutch fan club enter the stage dressed up as a gigantic champagne bottle and birthday cake. Their appearance takes Bono by surprise and he reels off to mini-stage while the cake collapses in the distance. Bono seeks a female companion to share a glass of the real thing and brings a pretty blonde girl on to the catwalk. After a sip of champagne, he tackles her and finishes the song sitting on top of her while she lies on her back laughing her brains out. The party continues on the mini-stage with Bono ad-libbing in "My Girl"...Edge starts strumming the opening chords of "I Will Follow", the stadium goes mad. They haven´t performed the song since the LoveTown tour and tonight´s version sounds semi-improvised great....It is Bono's birthday, and one of his most memorable telephone calls occurs tonight when he rings a local travel agent looking for a flight out of town, anywhere "as long as it's sunny." After the show, management will contact the agent again to explain Bono's call and offer her two complimentary tickets to the show the following night. Tonight´s show ends with another Elvis cover. "Are You Lonesome Tonight", performed by U2 for the first time. ...The MacPhisto act forces Bono to stretch his imagination to extremes and he obviously enjoys it immensely. "I don´t know where this thing is taking me," he tells Gavin Martin of NME after the show. "What happened tonight you couldn´t plan. It was exciting but scary at the same time."

"Chernobyl" - may 10, 1998. Belarussian/Ukranian government officials announce plans to restart Reactor #3 at Chernobyl on May 18, and keep it running past the agreed shut down date of the year 2000.

"Elevation" tour - may 10, 2001 - Indianapolis - Conseco Fieldhouse - "U2 Elevation 2001, Indianapolis - Conseco Fieldhouse, Indianapolis - It's Bono's birthday. Forty one years young and the arena here at the Conseco Fieldhouse is perforated with 'Happy Birthday Bono' signs and party hats, streamers and flying glitter. One sign reads, '27,000 people came to my birthday and all I got was this card'. 'Today?s my Birthday,' Bono sings as the band take the stage, 'Happy birthday to U2.' But this is no night off work to celebrate - by the time we have reached Until The End of the World, Bono is lying on the catwalk, grabbing a female photographer from a college magazine for a birthday kiss and then, walking down the catwalk, grabbing a pot of glitter from a fan and emptying it over himself. Another girl is up on stage to dance with the birthday man for New Year's Day before Stuck In A Moment (You Can't Get Out Of) receives its customary dedication to a departed member of the glitter band. 'This song is for someone who would have loved to have been here and would have especially loved the glitter. This song is for Michael Hutchence...' Kite arrives and Bono thanks a fervent and energetic audience for spending their 'hard-earned cash' on a rock show. No one is indicating second thoughts! 'This is a song we haven't played very often, this is Kite.' It's also a song that is now a set regular, in part because of the way fans at the early shows lobbied for its appearance. New York is followed by a tune some two decades older in I Will Follow and then Sunday Bloody Sunday, with total audience participation and snatches of Marley's Get Up Stand Up, with the singer wrapping an Irish flag around the microphone. 'Thank you, thanks a lot. I'd like to introduce you to the band old school style. 'In what we'd call high school we met up at 14, 15, 16 years old. I'd like to tell you what everyone was eating..' But he seems to have forgotten. 'On drums Larry Mullen Jnr, on bass Adam Clayton and wearing No. 23, The Edge....' Audience suitably appreciative. Arena roof rises imperceptively as a rejuvenated Desire arrives with Bono and Edge at the point of the heart catwalk and then another recent addition to the show. 'We've been playing this song from a record we don't play very often. At the start of the 90's we did a lot of work at Hansa Studios. It was an extraordinary time for us, we kind of floated out there, we found some beautiful songs...it's very cold in Berlin.' Midway through the song he takes a phone from a fan and sings into it. The lyrics are again transposed, London, Belfast and - with the audience bellowing - 'Indianapolis'. All I Want Is You with Bono opening alone on guitar arrives before Larry and Adam and Edge join in and then becomes Where the Streets Have No Name whereupon the video screens at the back of the stage read 'Happy Birthday Bono'. He sprints around the stage anyway and, with Mysterious Ways, wonders aloud if there are 'Any dancers in the house - it's my birthday.' Onto the catwalk he pulls up a girl from the heart of the audience, and then another. And another. You get the picture. This continues for some time until there are about 30 girls up on stage with U2, some kind of first. 'I feel like Hugh Hefner!' says Bono. But Hefner never had 27,000 people had one of his birthday parties." This night Edge wears red shirt#23.

19th 'VERTIGO' show - may 10, 2005 - Chicago, IL - United Center - Seating Chart - Kings of Leon. 3 fans on stage / champagne on Edge / "Party Girl" and "Original Of The Species" to Jordan / "Happy Birthday" to Bono / a solid performance! - For the 2nd night of U2's home video shoot, the band seeks continuity with last night's show. The setlist is the same until the final few songs. Laura, the fan who played guitar during 'Party Girl' last night, reprises that role tonight - but with a new twist as Bono ends the song by spraying a bottle of champagne on her, the band, and the crowd. It's Bono's birthday, and the crowd sings 'Happy Birthday' to him after 'Mysterious Ways.' Bono dances with a fan during 'Mysterious Ways' and brings a young boy on stage during 'Into the Heart.' Having played Vertigo for the cameras early on in the show, at the end the band reprise their hit single, with Bono claiming 'this one´s for me'The Edge is really into this one tonight, goes up on the ellipse for part of it. Tons of trademark Edge moves. Sunday Bloody Sunday - Great crowd pleaser, Bono sings "Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage..." in an obvious tribute to Chicago band Smashing Pumpkins. Party Girl - Strong full band version, graced by fan on guitar trying to keep up with the Edge. She receives a bottle of Korbel for her efforts, and the other gets sprayed into the ellipse and on Edge. Bono is obviously enjoying himself at this point. Dedicates it to Jordan...Original of the Species - Brilliant, Bono says "its the best song off of the record". Edge on piano, it is dedicated to Bono's daughter JoJo, who was obviously in attendance as he pointed to her in the VIP area in front of the sound desk. Some photos on: U2-vertigo-tour

MAY 9: 'you wanna drink with me?' / Macnass and MacPhisto première / great 'Miami' / playing a Les Paul / U2 shoots a DVD in Chicago - 18th VERTIGO show!

"Boy" tour - may 9, 1981 - Memphis / Tennessee at Poets.

"The Joshua Tree" tour - may 9, 1987. U2 perform in Hartford, Connecticut at the Civic Center. "I Still Haven´t Found What I´m Looking For" is played after "Trip Through Your Wires." Support is "Lone Justice".

may 9 1992 - Gent / Belgium - Flanders Expo. The day before his 32nd birthday, Bono strolls over the catwalk and picks up a girl from the crowd "You wanna drink with me? Hell, it´s my birthday!" She operates the camcorder and stays on the mini-stage for a couple of songs. At the end of "Sattelite of Love", Bono says to her,."I want you for my birthday..." Support is B.P. Fallon and "Fatima Mansions".

"ZOOTV - Zooropa" tour - may 9, 1993 - Rotterdam / Holland - Feyenoord Stadium - A theatre group called Macnass from Galway, Ireland, are hired for the tour, to perform a play before the support acts. They premiered tonight. Another premiere, is Bono´s new-ego in a gold lame suit; his face painted white with red lipstick, his hair combed-back and supporting red devil horns. As Bono said, later: "MacPhisto is The Fly when he´s old and fat and playing Las Vegas".

"POPMart" tour - may 9, 1997 - Tempe / AZ - Sun Devil Stadium - The band was phenomenal. One of the best moments in the concert was the song "Please." U2 played this so passionate and, as with many songs, changed it slightly for a more full effect. The Edge's guitar sound was fantastic, it made this song and "Miami" better than on the album."Sunday Bloody Sunday" in the middle of "Please" was only the familiar drum opening, at which the crowd went crazy. "With or Without You" brought back memories of concerts past when Bono sang a few verses of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." Bono described "Staring at the Sun" as the "sunshine song." The show was incredible, despite the new image and the stage setup and the hype, U2 still give aperformance with the same passion that they were known for in the 80¿. And musically, probably better. "

"Bono and Paul" - may 9, 1998. Bono and Paul McGuinness attend a lecture given by filmmaker Martin Scorcese.

"Elevation" tour - may 9, 2001 - Milwaukee / WI - Bradley Center - The best was when the Edge joined Bono at the very bottom of the heart. Facing each other, up close like two buskers on the subway platform, they played "In a Little While" in honor of Ramones leader Joey Ramone, who died recently. And their stripped-down "Desire," just vocals, guitar and a little harmonica at the end, was truly memorable. The band only played one song each off the "Zooropa" and "Pop" albums, instead focusing on new songs and classic hits from the 1980s. No complaints were heard from the audience, who sang along lustily to songs like "(Pride) In the Name of Love." For a guy who turns 41 today, Bono is still mesmerizing as a lead singer."I'd like to introduce the members of the band." As each band member strode down the walkway to the cacophonous cheers of the crowd, Bono gave each a hug. "...Wearing the number 13 shirt this evening in honor of another old dog. Playing a Les Paul when he could be flying the space shuttle. Will you welcome please, on lead guitar and vocals, even his mother calls him The Edge". Edge wears this night red shirt#13.

U2 shoots a DVD in Chicago - may 9, 2005. Tonight's Vertigo Tour show in Chicago marks the first of a two-night video shoot for a planned DVD release. The show is, by almost all accounts, better than two nights ago in Chicago. A special moment occurs late in the show when Bono brings a female fan on stage to play guitar. The girl had been holding a sign asking for the chance, and when given it, she chooses to play "Party Girl", a song which hasn't been performed yet this tour. The version is shaky at best, but -- with the film crew rolling again the following night -- the same girl, Laura, is brought on stage a second time and together she and the band do a much better version of the song. 18th 'VERTIGO' show - may 9, 2005 - Chicago, IL - United Center - Kings of Leon. DVD filmed / "Party Girl" debuts" / Keanu Reeves was there / Jena danced with Bono! I named my son Edge. Rocko, a member of U2's road crew, takes the stage before U2 and tells the crowd tonight's show is being filmed for a DVD, saying it will be a 'magical' show. Bono brings a young girl (Jena-6 years old) on stage during 'Into the Heart.' Later, he brings a female fan on stage to play guitar on 'Party Girl.' She struggles a bit, but gets through with encouragement from Bono and an enthusiastic crowd. It's the first time 'Party Girl' is played this tour, and only the fourth time since the Zoo TV tour. He is surprised at her height and wonders how Chicago grows them so tall and beautiful. Gloria tells Bono that she wants to play Party Girl and he helps her along. Meanwhile on stage, The Edge insists that Adam play bass but Adam declines. They had already switched instruments for 40. The Edge trying to fumble with the bass once again asks Adam to play bass. Larry sorts out the chaos by pointing out that Bono and Gloria are almost done anyway. The Edge seems content with that assessment....The Edge lingered all night on notes, playing extended versions of his parts (An Cat Dubh and others). He was chopping at the Joshua tree again. They were very interactive with the crowd, talking, dancing, taking a number of items up on stage including an Irish flag and a t-shirt from a guy that said "I named my son Edge" or something! MAY 8: "So shut up or get out!" / 5 minutes and the same chords / Cody and Jane and Christine Ray / "Entropy" / Bono at Tribeca.

"Boy" tour - may 8, 1981. U2 perform in New Orleans, Louisiana at Ol' Man Rivers. During the show, a man spits toward the stage. Bono orders the house lights on and points the man out and refers to him as a "real punk...I'll tell you why he's a real punk...because he read about it in the papers. He wears a suit, it's a uniform. He spits because he read about it." The Edge continues the rant by shouting, "So shut up or get out!".

"War" tour - may 8, 1983. U2 perform in Harford, Connecticut at Trinity College. Bono attempts to get to the roof of the building behind the outdoor stage, but unfortunately the door to the roof is locked. He explains his five minute disappearance(in which the rest of the band play the same cords over and over for "Electric Co.") by telling the crowd he has shown everyone in the building the white flag.

"The Joshua Tree" tour - may 8, 1987. U2 perform in Hartford, Connecticut at the Civic Center. This second night's performance of "Pride(In the Name of Love)" is dedicated to a roadie and his wife, Cody and Jane--Bono announces to the crowd that "they just got a little baby today called Christine Ray! That's the power of love!" Support is "Lone Justice".

"Entropy" - may 8, 1998. Judith Godreche announces plans to co-star in Joanou's upcoming film "Entropy", another film featuring U2.

"Bono helps out at Tribeca Film Festival" - may 8, 2004. Bono is in New York City tonight to help open the free concert taking place as part of the annual Tribeca Film Festival. Africa and AIDS are the main topics of what turns into a fairly lengthy speech to the crowd gathered at New York's Battery Park.

MAY 7: U2 starts 'The Unforgettable Fire' in Slane Castle / Bono dedicates a song to his brother Norman / starts 'ZOOTV' in Europe / Bono creates MacPhisto / Larry accepts flowers / 17th VERTIGO show!

"Boy" tour - may 7, 1981. U2's show in Birmingham, Alabama is cancelled.

"War" tour - may 7, 1983. U2 perform in Albany, New York at the State University of New York as part of "Mayfest". Support are Robert Hazard and David Johansen.

"U2 hole up in Slane Castle" - may 7, 1984. U2 hole up in Slane Castle, Co. Meath, to record with new producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. Four weeks later they move back to Windmill Lane Studios to complete work on their fourth studio album. Eno, who was known for his electronic wizardry with such bands as Roxy Music, and lesser known solo albums, "Music for Films", "Music for Airports", and "Discreet Music", is actively recruited by U2 to help with the new album. When he was first approached by the band, Eno turns them down. Eno later would recall, "They just kept nagging me, so much so that I listened to some of their old material, which didn't inspire me...I was mystified by their reasons for wanting me. Once I'd met Bono I knew I had to work with him. There was something about him. He talked about the band in a way that I hadn't heard anyone doing in a long while and so, on that basis, out of curiousity I agreed to work with them." A fourty-five minute documentary on the recording of the album is made by Barry Devlin, which eventually finds it's way onto the "The Unforgettable Fire" video.

"The Joshua Tree" tour - may 7, 1987. U2 perform in Hartford, Connecticut at the Civic Center. Edge is a madman during "I Will Follow"; Larry accepts flowers at the end; Edge wears red shirt#3, this night.

17th 'VERTIGO' show - may 7, 2005 - Chicago, IL - United Center - Kings of Leon. Keanu Reeves, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin were in the audience. Love and Peace: spotlights in hand panning the crowd built up the anticipation of a great beginning. Vertigo was carried by the Edge, he owns that song. 40 as a closer. Back to the good old days...Adam and Edge switched sides...the AB trilogy. Zoo-The Fly-Mysterious Ways, so great to hear them in order and sounding great with other standards....The Edge again rips up Fly. Larry, the Fischer-Price keyboard during Yahweh. Edge played like 18 guitars including a huge one for Yahweh. There was a lot of chatter between songs by Edge and Bono. Edge was bluesy on Bullet, electric on Vertigo, and pulsating on the AB trio. Coldplay was there, he (Bono) mentioned it...He (Bono) grabbed a U.N. flag a girl threw from behind the stage and tied it around his neck...He (Bono) did apologize for the ticket mess up...no pulling someone on stage to play guitar, no Pope story. Very little talking. Some photos on: U2tours.com
