JUNE 2: Bono meets Rene Castro / ..."a religious man who became a very dangerous man when he failed to work out the hands of love"... / more with Island Records / swastikas on screen during "Bullet the Blue Sky" / my friend The Edge / Rosario's Pizza !

"11 O´Clock Tick Tock" - june 2, 1980. U2 perform in Uneaton, England at the 77 Club. Support is "Fashion".

"Rene Castro" - june 2, 1986. While preparing for the first "Conspiracy of Hope" concert in San Francisco, Bono and Lou Reed meet Chilean artist Rene Castro, who because his artwork was criticized by the government of dictator General A. Pinochet, was tortured and beaten by the military. Castro had been held for two years in a concentration camp until Amnesty International was able to free him. Castro's work in the US focuses mainly on countries in Central America which suffer from the US's military intervention. Bono and Castro agree to stay in touch.

"The Joshua Tree" tour - june 2, 1987. U2 perform in London, England at Wembley Stadium. The show is added for those people who don't want to see U2 in a large stadium. The show is five days before parliamentary elections in the UK, and the show is politcially charged. During "Exit", Bono explains the song is about "a religious man who became a very dangerous man when he failed to work out the hands of love," and then adds, "You could call him Ian Paisley[Irish politician], yeah...sure! You can put anyone you like in that spot, put me in the spot!" During "Maggie's Farm", Bono says, "You've got a few days to make up your mind. We sing songs about our country being divided. Tonight, we sing this song for your country because it is also divided. I'm not going to tell you how to vote, but you will all be voting won't you?...Sing for me, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm no more..." During "C'mon Everybody", Bono lets his feeling on the elections known, "You know I fancy Margaret Thatcher, but I think she's going to have to go..." Support is "Hurrah!"

"U2 extends contract with Island Records" - june 2, 1993 - U2 and Island Records announce an extension of the band's current record contract. The agreement gives Island the rights to U2's next six albums. The deal reportedly pays the band $60 million, a $10 million-plus advance per album, and an incredible 25 percent royalty rate on every album sold. Said U2 manager Paul McGuinness in a phone call from London: "We are extremely pleased to stay with a company that believes in us. Couldn't be happier."

"ZOOTV - Zooropa" - june 2, 1993. U2 perform in Frankfurt, Germany at the Waldstadion. At a show in Frankfurt, Germany, Bono makes repeated references to the latest in a stream of racist incidents in Germany, where a firebomb was thrown into a house owned by a Turkish family in the town of Genc. The first Zooropa show in Germany is also noteworthy because U2 continue to display burning swastikas on screen during "Bullet the Blue Sky," even though the image of the swastika has been declared illegal to display publically in the newly-united Germany.

"Elevation" tour - june 02, 2001 / Albany, NY - Pepsi Arena - PJ Harvey. During 'Bad,' Bono sings a brief bit of The Verve's 'The Drugs Don't Work' and some of the Rolling Stones' 'Time Is On My Side'. Edge wears red shirt# 7, this night. Bono introduces him: "I´d like to introduce my friend The Edge".

Rosario's Pizza - June 2005 - New York City - Irish rockers Bono and The Edge of U2 were on the Lower East Side recently filming a video in the Slipper Room at Orchard and Stanton Sts. Seeing all the commotion, Sal Bartolomeo from Rosario's Pizza across the street came over and got a warm reception from the super group's lead singer. 'I felt I want to shake this guy's hand,' Bartolomeo recounted. 'He's a good guy, does a lot of good things'. I said, 'How you doin' Bono? I'm Sal, best pizza man around the street. You're the best singer in the world.' He put his hand on my shoulder and said, 'Everyone should buy Sal's pizza - with pepperoni!' Everyone's cheering, 'Hey Sal!' Afterwards, everyone came into my store and said, 'Sal, you were with Bono...you cool!' source: thevillager
