JULY 31: U2´S HISTORY: at McGonagle´s / white flag / 'Stay' / 'Singing In The Rain' - 'Children of the Revolution' / 'Kite' for Bob Hewson - red shirt #2 / 54th 'VERTIGO' show: The rain was torrential - 'Rain' and 'Singing In The Rain' - '7 Seconds' at the start of 'Yahweh' - Lars Ulrich, Prince Albert of Monaco, Prince Fred of Denmark and Brazilian soccer Ronaldo were in the audience - Bono explains fruit tea, families and friends and beach - Wendy dances with Bono / Bono crowned 'most influential'
"Early Ireland" - july 31, 1978. U2 perform in Dublin at McGonagle's as support for "Revolver". McGuinness, U2's new manager, insists that U2 do not have to perform before the crowd arrives. ****U2: McGonagle's, Dublin - Hot Press, August 17, 1978 - Bill Graham - It's as well Revolver have finally found themselves with competition like U-2 on the up and up. With a passionate lead singer who's not one to ape other's microphone poses and a guitarist who supplies a mild metal additive, U-2 are impressive contenders with the appetite and talent to improve beyond their already creditable status. Standing apart from this year's new bands in their suss and willingness to learn that will soon end any technical faults, U-2 profit from the fact that they've an identity that needs little alteration. Revolver recovered in time but they had better not stand still, U-2 are ready to pass everyone out. Oh, and both bands slew last week's British import, Advertising. Guaranteed Irish, guaranteed quality. © Hot Press, 1978. All Rights Reserved.****
"October" tour - july 31, 1982. U2 perform in Gateshead, England at the International Stadium, as support for "The Police". U2 are rumoured to play every major UK festival in 1982. The Gateshead festival is the only show they perform. Bono grabs a flag from the crowd and climbs a stack of speakers while singing "Electric Co.". Upon reaching the top of the speakers, Bono exclaims, "There is only one flag, the white flag." Bono joins The Police on stage for a performance of "Invisible Sun". The show is filmed by UK rock program "The Tube".
"ZOOTV - Zooropa" tour - july 31, 1993. U2 perform in Stockholm, Sweden at Stockholm Stadion. The introduction to "Bad" as U2 had a satellite hookup with a bunker in Sarajevo, Bono interviewed a woman who's fiance was at the show and she did not know if they would ever see each other again. It was very emotional and she said something to the effect of how we could go on and enjoy a rock concert but they had to live with the war. The crowd was silent and Bono dedicated "Bad" to her and her fiance. Another highlight was Bono introducing "Stay" as a song "about an angel" and that it was the first time they had performed the song live. It was a very amazing rendition. A very great concert.
"POPMart" TOUR - july 31, 1997. U2 perform in Mannheim, Germany. Maimarktgelaende - Die Fantastischen Vier. Edge´s karaoke this night is "Singing In The Rain." U2 does a cover version of "Children of the Revolution" by T-Rex during the encore
"Elevation" tour - july 31, 2001 / Arnhem, The Netherlands - Gelredome - Kelis - Bono sings 'Kite' for his father who is ill, and 'In a Little While' for the late Dutch artist Herman Brood. 'When I Get Home' is a Brood song. During 'Bad', Bono holds a young girl on his shoulders and runs around the heart with her. Edge wears red shirt #2 this night.
54th 'VERTIGO' show - july 31, 2005 - Copenhagen, Denmark - Parken - The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Razorlight. The rain was torrential / 'Rain' and 'Singing In The Rain' / '7 Seconds' at the start of 'Yahweh' / Lars Ulrich, Prince Albert of Monaco, Prince Fred of Denmark and Brazilian soccer Ronaldo were in the audience / Bono explains fruit tea, families and friends and beach / Wendy dances with Bono! It rains heavily throughout the show, prompting Bono to sing bits of the Beatles' 'Rain' two times and 'Singing in the Rain' once. He also sings a bit of '7 Seconds' by Youssou N'Dour at the start of Yahweh, and is carrying an umbrella during Zoo Station. Football / Soccer star Ronaldo is at the show. **** 'See the Vikings show their souls tonight'...: It was wet, wet, wet in Copenhagen last night, but it takes more than a little storm to dampen Danish enthusiasm for U2. A little bit of rain (well, quite a lot actually) failed to dampen spirits in Copenhagen last night. It was the third of U2's three nights in Scandinavia and it lived up to the heights of the earlier two. But was it wet? Yes it was wet. In fact there was a thunder storm about two hours before the show and it rained pretty heavily during the gig. No wonder Bono changed the lyric in Streets from 'dust clouds' to 'rain clouds'. But, as he also ad-libbed during Beautiful Day, 'The clouds can come, they will soon go away.' Supermodel Helena Christiansen was here tonight, looking elegant in the rain, along with a clutch of other famous faces - princes and footballers and local rock'n roll stars. (Lars Ulrich, Metallica drummer, as you ask, along with Prince Albert of Monaco, Prince Fred of Denmark and Ronaldo, prince of the football pitch.) But perhaps the strangest moment was when Bono invited the photographers from the pit up on to the stage during Electric Co. Turns out they were a little shy! Our time in this city has been 24/7 paparazzi - the band got away to Helena Christiansen's beach house at one point and the papers have been covered in stories of supermodels and rock stars. Very Zoo TV. So considering the snappers have been chasing the band half way round Denmark, they seemed remarkably stage-shy last night! A smidgeon of Boney M ('Brown Girl in the Ring') opened up Elevation with most of Denmark joining in but boy did people really go for it when the lyrics of Beautiful Day got a complete overhaul to reflect tonight's setting. 'See the world in red and white / See the Vikings show their souls tonight / Swimming with Helena and Ali in the sea / On a coast of a beautiful country / See four seasons in one day / The clouds can come they will soon go away / See the bird with the leaf in her mouth / After the flood all the colours come out' The Danish flags were flying proudly all through the audience. 'Well okay, we've really been having a little bit of a good time here in your beautiful city of Copenhagen.' And we were, regardless of this being the wettest night of the tour. Bono took a moment to explain some comments of Edge about the amount of drink he planned to be taking while staying in Denmark. 'The Edge is not one of us,' explained Bono. 'He comes from the future. We've been drinking a lot of your fruit tea. Beautiful friends and families here, that we've known over the years, out swimming in the sea this morning... Beautiful.' City of Blinding Lights, Miracle Drug, Sometimes, the night was racing by as Love and Peace arrived with some thoughts about co-existence. 'Not a problem in Copenhagen right? / What about tomorrow? / And next year? / I get the feeling / To CoeXisT might get a little harder...' As a raging Bullet The Blue Sky set pulses racing, it was literally pouring in Copenhagen and by Miss Sarajevo it was, frankly, torrential. The band were getting pretty wet but they looked great! Bono switched to dry tyres for Pride but his new clothes were soon soaking too. Adam, as usual, seemed to be enjoying himself. Bono told him he loved him, which made him smile even more. All the cellphones defied the rain and shone out bright during One, which ended with an appropriate snatch of The Beatle's Rain. You forget what it takes to keep a show like this on the road - particularly one in weather like this - and Bono took time out to thanks the crew for being so professional. More than that, they would have to load out after the show: 'They're amazing!' Hear hear! **** birthday girl Wendy dances with Bono / Bono counts down in Danish: At the start, the audience seem a little timid. A photographer is on the B-stage during Electric Co. During All I Want is You, birthday girl Wendy makes it onto the stage to dance with Bono. It is very, very wet and Bono puts on a rain jacket. During Zoo Station he comes out with an umbrella....Yahweh starts with a snippet of 7 seconds" > Bono counts down Vertigo in Danish, but nobody responds. At the start, the audience seem a little timid - they're frozen by the rain. Bono invites a lot of photographers on stage during Electric Co. and they follow him on the catwalk until Bono tells them to 'fuck off'. But one of them lingers and in the end is manhandled off the stage by security. A very drunk male fan jumps on stage during Streets and makes it within inches of Bono. Local security do nothing, U2's security tackle the guy and roll off the stage with him. Bono's body guard, John, sits on top of him holding him down, while another asks Bono if he is all right. The drunk fan is oblivious and keeps laughing evne when other fans scold him. John eventually drags him away. During All I Want is You, birthday girl Wendy makes it onto the stage to dance with Bono. It is very, very wet and Bono puts on a rain jacket. During Zoo Station he comes out with an umbrella....Lars Ulrich and his father, Neneh Cherry, Helena Christensen, Sean Penn, Ronaldo and actress Louise Iversen, prince Frederik and princess Mary, minister of culture Brian Mikkelsen are all at the show. Snippets: Beautiful Day - Sgt. Peppers, Rain / The Fly - Singing In The Rain / Yahweh starts with a snippet of 7 seconds (Neneh Cherry is at the show) / Vertigo (2) - Enter Sandman" **** Bono on the cover of the journal **** ...Edge's solo sounds like sirens; sirens in a war-torn city...: ...Copenhagen and U2 had a special contact yesterday....the band seemed more relaxed than ever. An example would be Beautiful Day, where Bono added 'See the world in red and white' followed by a whole new verse, especially for Denmark. At the beginning of Miracle Drug, Bono would talk about Edge's decision to 'drink heavily' the night before. 'You must understand - Edge is not like us. He's from the future.' - 'In the future, Edge drinks this fruit tea,' Edge cracks up, and Bono continues, 'some pretty wild shit happens.'...Another thing it rained heavily. But not only did it rain heavily... It began right in the beginning of City Of Blinding Lights. Imagine the lights being shut down as always, suddenly it the huge screen begins lighting up the first drops of the rain... It was like it was meant to be....Miss Sarajevo after Bullet The Blue Sky, especially now that the last parts of Edge's solo sounds like sirens; sirens in a war-torn city....**** ...they did not seem to mind the rain...: It was impressed how the band did not seem to mind the rain. (It did actually rain heavily for almost the entire show...) Bono, Edge and Adam were all frequent visitors on the catwalks...." Some photos on U2-Vertigo-tour and Interference.

Party Girl is the penultimate song, and this is the first European gig without Yahweh in the set. **** 'A World in White is Underway' : More breathtaking action from the audience and a great show at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg tonight. The audience, just so you are not in total suspense, created a sea of white tonight, surprising the band as they arrived on stage. The band, just so as you are not in total suspense, surprised the audience with Party Girl, including traditional champagne bottle opening moment! **** White wave : ...the rain starts to come down on Ullevi stadium during 'One' and the place lookes amazing as more people than ever hold their cell phone aloft. His day begins with a rally to speak out in support of AIDS relief at the Boston launch of the ONE Campaign, where Bono says he's a fan of America. "That is the kind of America I love -- face out. It is concerned about what is going on in the rest of the world, and not just about its interests." Bono later appears on the floor of the Democratic Convention with his wife Ali, where he mingles with other convention attendeees and does a live interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper. His evening ends at a tribute for Senator Ted Kennedy, where Bono sings "Pride" with the Boston Pops orchestra providing support. Bono changes several key lyrics to personalize them for Kennedy, most notably the refrain about Martin Luther King, Jr., instead making references to John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr. He also sings "The Hands That Built America" with backing from Yo-Yo Ma.

(And, let's be honest, some very fine, very young and very good looking examples of the human kind!) 'Thank you Paddy Casey,' notes Bono, of a great support set earlier while Edge introduced New Year's Day on the piano. 'A new Irish artist coming through.'...Adam takes the chance to wander through a sea of people along the b-stage, a different experience tonight as the floor of the venue is gigantic and there is no real grandstand. Then, as if out of nowhere, someone buzzes the sky in a parachute and as Bono raises his arms in welcome, everyone claps a steady time with Larry. 'Truly, truly beautiful,' announces the singer as Beautiful Day...'The sun always shines on TV,' adlibbs Bono, always available with the right cultural reference, this one well-received in in the land of Aha. 'Thank you for coming out,' he adds, before repeating his gratitude, this time in Norwegian. 'Thank you for giving us a great life. We're just getting started actually...'...Someone lucky gets to take her bow on stage and slowdance the rockstar for All I Want Is You. 'You say you want a diamond in a ring of gold...' (She'd settle for this any time!) 'Four notes, four notes can be so simple' and Edge plays those four notes and we're about to be treated with a Miracle Drug. 'We'd like to play this tonight for Jan Paulsen, woke up and couldn't speak his native language. He woke up speaking English...if you believe that! He came to see us backstage and he looks great -handsome Norwegian that he is.'...'This is a piece of grafitti sitting on a wall, it says 'CoeXisT'... you've got that going on here I think in Oslo - 'CoeXisT'.'...'We'd like to dedicate this (Miss Sarajevo) to all those who lost their lives in London, Turkey and the Middle East in the last few weeks' we're turning our song into a prayer.'...Adam and Bono are cruising the b-stages, with Adam shaking hands with people while also playing a bass guitar. 'I am usually pleading with local governments but your country Norway is doing more than any other country in the world. It is humbling and overwhelming. 'It's hard when a rock star has nothing to give out about. I would like to thank Prime Minister Bondevik and Hilda Johnson for all their hard work on this stuff. I want to thank all of you for giving them the permission to spend your money. All we need is 100 Norways!' During One Bono reaches out for the Norwegian flag and hangs it over his microphone. There's a snatch of The Jean Genie in The Fly, as Bono warns, 'Look out Oslo, I'm running out of change, There's a lot of things if I could I'd rearrange.' By the end of the show it is almost dark, you can see lights on the trees next to the stage and you suddenly remember you are in Scandinavia and it's real pretty. The balloons, the tower of lights the stage with the band. Bono in middle of 40.000 Norways. * Edge travelled to tell us it´s gonna be alright! : Bono said that "The Edge is really from the future! And he have travelled back in our time to tell us that it`s gonna be alright!" It was so funny! Especially for Edge, who just stood there laughing! * The girl who danced with Bono : Pernille Jørgensen from Halden [Norway, near Swedish border] talks to Dagbladet about the experience she calls 'the best two minutes of her life', dancing with Bono on stage. Says the 18 year old: 'Bono smelt like a real man. Not manly sweat, but just sweaty enough, good and proper male perfume.' Pernille says she got eye contact with Bono while she sung, pointed and screamed during All I Want is You. Did Bono say anything to her while she was on stage? 'Don't speak, is the only thing I remember that he said to me...' Pernille, who has been a fan for 5 years and queued for 10 hours, didn't dare look at the audience in front of her. She concentrated on Bono instead, but: '...that was almost just as scary. But then he put his head on my shoulder and I felt very safe.' Someone should bottle that manly sweat and sell it. Perhaps Sweden's Prime Minister could do with a whiff: Göran Persson has no plans to invite Bono for a meeting, according to Aftonbladet. Says Bono: 'Bondevik obviously has better taste than Sweden's Prime Minister.'" Bono and Pernille * Vertigo II = Norwegian "En, to, tre, fjorten!" / Bono heaped praise on the country and its leadership! : ...a Norwegian countdown for the second Vertigo: "En, to, tre, fjorten!" In the evening, before the show, Bono met with the Norwegian Prime Minister. NRK tv broadcast the impromptu press conference during which Bono heaped praise on the country and its leadership: "I took this meeting, very different circumstances than I usually find myself in, because normally my relationship with politicians is to put my arm around their back and try to twist their arms. But I've come to meet your Prime Minister to thank him for his leadership, and for the Norwegian leadership on the issues that mean so much to me, which is the poorest of the poor, and how a billion people on this planet still live on less than a dollar a day. JULY 24: Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (acoustic) for the first time this tour / It's end of the line for historic Berlin station / 'In Their Own Words’ - 'U2byU2 - release sept 22nd!
Elevation tour - july 24, 2001 - Zurich, Switzerland - Hallenstadion - Kelis. U2 performed two verses of Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (acoustic) for the first time this tour. Running To Stand Still makes an unexpected appearance and was not listed on the original setlist. Happy Birthday was sung for Joe Ravage.
It's end of the line for historic Berlin station - July 24, 2005 - THE trains now arriving at Zoo railway station in western Berlin are to be among the last - much to the anger of a city that feels it is losing one of its greatest cultural and historical Cold War icons. German Rail has announced that, from May, long-distance trains will no longer stop at Berlin's primary train terminal. Bahnhof Zoo is not large. It has only four platforms, there is one restaurant that has seen better days, no fantastic tile murals or imposing architecture and, aside from travellers, there is a permanent presence of down-and-outs, punks, prostitutes and homeless. But the downgrading of the Zoo to a local rail station has provoked more letters of protest than just about any other municipal decision in the past five decades. Bahnhof Zoo tugs at the heartstrings of west Berliners like no other single structure. It was here that loved ones arrived from the east when the communists let them go, that trains arrived through East Germany bearing dignitaries, family, friends and supplies. During the almost three decades that the Berlin Wall separated two political philosophies, not to mention neighbours, Zoo Station was the western sector's main train terminal. It came almost to represent the small island of democracy and capitalism in the socialist East German sea. "The symbolic power of the station is very strong," said Manuela Damianakis, of Berlin's planning office. "It was one of the most important parts of the city, especially since it was the arrival point for visitors from the West." With the construction of the Berlin Wall, the traditional centre, the neighbourhood of Mitte, was cut off from the west of the city. A new centre developed, with its focus around Zoo Station and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. It served as a capitalist counterpoint to the socialist city centre at Alexanderplatz in East Berlin. "There is something mythic about the station because it was at the very heart of West Berlin life for so many years," added Damianakis. The station has been the subject of books, songs by rock stars such as U2 and Nina Hagen and a popular musical, Line 1, which tells the story of a West German girl arriving at Zoo Station to experience life and love in the big city. But, when the wall fell, the planners of the reborn capital opted for a grandiose new central station, the Lehrter Bahnhof, several stops away. It means that the speeding express trains that sweep along at 250kph will now pass through Zoo Station or avoid it altogether. source: scotsman

Ever wanted to have a conversation with the band themselves ? ‘U2byU2’ is the ultimate conversation with Adam, Bono, Edge, Larry and Paul McGuinness in which they tell their own side of the U2 story. Featuring more than 1500 images including previously unpublished photographs from the personal archives of the band, this hefty 350-page tells the U2 story from the perspective of those who know it best – and it brings it right up to date in 2006. ‘U2’s story is an extraordinary one and we are proud to be publishing this book.’ said Trevor Dolby, Publishing Director of HarperCollins Entertainment. ‘U2byU2 is a book not just for the fans but for everyone interested in music and modern culture.’ Source: U2.com

JULY 22: Ian Curtis during 'Pride' / U2 Support Their Friend (ShowbizIreland)!
"The Joshua Tree" tour - july 22, 1987. U2 perform in Munich, Germany at the Olympiahalle. U2 Support Their Friend... Showbizireland (june 22, 2005) - In Ireland we're used to not seeing friends and relations for years at a time but there's one occasion that always seems to bring us together - a funeral. Gavin Friday's father was buried this week and all his friends rallied around him...In the past ShowBiz Ireland has been criticized for our coverage of celebrity funerals and we completely understand why people feel this way. THE EDGE & GAVIN FRIDAY - But in Ireland funerals are a strange combination of grief and support and remembrance that we feel need to be documented and thus remembered...BONO & GAVIN FRIDAY - And there is probably no other event in this country that brings everyone together like a funeral - family and friends return from all corners of the world to support the bereaved... It's probably one of the last traditions we have left in Ireland! BONO & THE EDGE - This week singer Gavin Friday buried his father Robert Paschal Hanvey draped in a Dublin flag as all of his friends from the world of showbiz gathered to lend their support. ANDREA CORR & BONO - It was very moving to see the likes of the boys from U2, who know Gavin since childhood, coming back from their massive world tour just to be there. - JIM SHERIDAN & ADAM CLAYTON - The four U2 lads Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton plus all their respective partners all turned up at the funeral in Finglas. - LARRY MULLEN & ANN ACHESON - Other Irish stars who attended the funeral included Andrea Corr, Jim Sheridan, Paul Brady, John Rocha, Guggi and many others... - ALI HEWSON - R.I.P. Robert Paschal Hanvey. - GUGGI & SON - ADAM CLAYTON'S FRIEND - Photos: ShowbizIreland

"The Joshua Tree" tour - july 21, 1987. U2 perform in Munich, Germany at the Olympiahalle. On the first night, Bono recalls one of the first times U2 played Germany: "The first time we played here we played a small club called The Sugarshack. We walked onstage at about one o'clock in the morning and we had been drinking alcohol--Bavarian Schnapps! Because it was way past our bedtime we were all very drunk and in fact we fell asleep in the dressing room before we came on stage and our manager Paul Mcguinness, was shaking us saying 'You have the whole of Germany outside, you must wake up!' And we said, 'No, no..we want to sleep...' But I didn't know itw as going to be like this! So now when we drink Bavarian alcohol, we drink it after the gig, not before!" "Spanish Eyes" is also played again. Leslie Dowdall of "In Tua Nua" pours champagne during "Party Girl". Support is "In Tua Nua".
"Elevation" tour - july 21, 2001 / Turin, Italy - Stadio Delle Alpi - Timoria, Verdena, Fun Lovin' Criminals. U2 plays its first outdoor show of the tour at the 80,000 capacity Delle Alpi stadium. Edge wears this night, burgundly shirt #7.

On the 2nd night of filming, U2 plays a show that matches last night's concert. Original of the Species is again played with members of the Symphony Orchestra of Theatre Carlo Coccia de Novara on both b-stages, The Edge on the guitar and Terry Lawless on piano. Wonder strong string section under the super lights. "The crowd was very enthusiastic again, singing along to Edge's guitar and keyboard parts as they had already been doing yesterday (imagine a whole stadium singing the keyboard melody to New Year's Day and you get an idea of what the atmosphere in San Siro was like). Bono pulled a girl on stage during All I Want Is You and they danced ring-a-ring-a-roses, with all Italian men staring happily in fascination....the lights were very low...they keep the lights down at 15-20% of the normal intensity in order to make screens, band and audience all evenly lit for the filming. Bono is in great mood. He makes photos of the audience (Elevation), plays with a ball and shoots it into the audience (BD), talks about the DVD shoot (before ISHFWILF), pulls a girl on stage and dances with her (AIWIY), talks about his meeting with the late pope (One) and puts on a shirt of a fan, on which is written "Underground" (WOWY). Original Of The Species again with a string orchestra on both b-stages. Some photos on: U2-Vertigo-tour

JULY 20: Bono Honorary Citizenship of Turin / U2 and McCartney make the record books / 49th 'VERTIGO' show: The show is filmed for a video release / 'Original Of The Species' played by U2 (Edge on guitar) & Orchestra / fans say: 'Hi Bob' during 'SYCMIOYO' / Bono sung 'Miss Sarajevo' and Luciano Pavarotti was at the attendance / U2’s Vertigo Tour Hits The Road Again / Irish band have been given the all-clear to construct the tower, which will be the highest building in the city !
Bono Honorary Citizenship of Turin - july 20, 2005 - U2 opens a two-night stand in Milan, Italy, tonight. Both shows are filmed for an expected DVD release. Prior to the show, Bono meets with representatives of the Turin City Council, who present him with Honorary Citizenship, the highest dignity a non-resident can have in Turin. The honor had actually been bestowed in September, 2003, but Turin officials were unable to meet up with Bono until today.
U2 and McCartney make the record books -july 20, 2005. U2 is back in the Guinness Book of World Records today, thanks to the Live 8 performance of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" with Paul McCartney. The song will be listed for being the "quickest single put on sale" -- it was available on iTunes and other digital stores within 45 minutes after the performance. U2 has been in the Guinness Book twice before -- for "Largest Audience for a rock tour" (playing to over 2.9 million people in 93 shows on the PopMart tour) and "Largest Video Screen" (the screen on the PopMart tour).
49th 'VERTIGO' show - july 20, 2005 - Milan, Italy - San Siro Stadium - Feeder, Ash. The show is filmed for a video release / 'Original Of The Species' played by U2 (Edge on guitar) & Orchestra / beautiful Edge / fans say: 'Hi Bob' during 'SYCMIOYO' / Bono sung 'Miss Sarajevo' and Luciano Pavarotti was at the attendance! Original of the Species is played with members of the Symphony Orchestra of Theatre Carlo Coccia de Novara, along with Terry Lawless on keyboards. Tonight's show is filmed for a possible video release. The first of two shows to be filmed for future release. 'Larry Mullen Jnr' announced Bono, after the band arrived on stage to receive the applause of the Italian fans while Wake Up was still playing. 75,000 fans. Dropping effortlessly into a little Italian (how many languages has he been sprucing up on for this tour ?) Bono introduced Miracle Drug, after ovation after ovation arrived after each song in the first third of the show. 'This is for the doctors and nurses, people who keep us alive'. And Miracle Drug was all dressed up with some very cool new visuals, trailed by Willie Williams's in his recent U2.Com diary entries. Looked amazing - as our photos illustrate. 'Feels like we're in an old Italian house, with my father Bob,'explained the singer, as Edge opened up 'Sometimes...' 'This is for you.' And here was another example of the mysterious communal mind that seems to have joined the tour. As Bono sang, everyone in the stand opposite the stage lifted up red, white and green boards which spelled out the greeting, 'HI BOB'. (How do they do this ? Could it be something do with the internet?) 'Love and Peace' signalled the arrival of Adam and Larry at the tip of the b-stages, swapping places, in due course, with Bono and Edge to close the track....Seems entire audience was clapping along to Larry's drumbeat for Bullet. Miss Sarajevo ('To the victims in England of the London bombings') was greeted with respect and sympathy. It was no surprise to find the opera in the singer, but finding the singer in Italy seemed to take the opera to new levels. And we still had Original of the Species to come, this time with the bonus of a 20-strong string section - ten each on either b-stage. Now that really was a bit special. And everyone who wasn't there will get the chance to see it on the small screen at some point. Big spot lights. Wonder lights at back. Red. Hi Bob. Luciano Pavarotti was at the attendance. ...The Edge modello barbone con gli stessi jeans del liceo e naturalmente cloche scura pigiata in testa....Some wonder photos on: U2-Vertigo-tour

"Kilkenny out of U2's financial picture" - july 19, 1998. Paul McGuinness confirms that Ossie Kilkenny will no longer handle U2's accounting. Sources tell the media the dispute stems from several bad investments during the band's 20-year history.

At the end of an evening full of smiles and mutual appreciating, Bono donned his cap for All Because of You and called out 'Fares, please'. All aboard the Vertigo juggernaut." Bono phones in to last ever Mystery Train ‘God bless you and the babies too!’ - July 15, 2006 - Bono paid tribute to radio DJ John Kelly on the last ever Mystery Train on RTE radio 1 on Thursday evening. Phoning in from France ‘under an orange moon, thinking of Enniskillen’, he talked to Kelly about the — wait for it — ‘extraordinary’ show, which has been prematurely axed in a recent RTE programming shake up, as well as congratulating him on the imminent birth of his twins. Listen to Bono's call - mp3. Later on during the show Bono rang in again (as did The Edge), off air, to request ‘Death is not the End’ by Dylan, or Gavin Friday, but Kelly didn’t have it on him. However, he had played the track earlier in the week in memory of Paschal Hanvey (Gavin’s father), who passed away a year ago this Wednesday. We’re very sad to see a great, eclectic and unpredictable show like gentleman John’s go off air and wish him the best of luck, wherever the tracks may take him. The good news is, John Kelly announced he will be back on air in October, on Lyrics FM. (1.30 - 2.30pm, Monday to Friday), with a different type of show. He encourages listeners to join him there.

JULY 14: Bono calls Bill Carter in Sarajevo / U2 & Paul McCartney / U2 set Album Chart record / U2 in Wisseloord studios - Hilversum - south-east of Amsterdam / The winning answer was selected by ONE: the Campaign to Make Poverty History !
"ZOOTV - Zooropa" tour - july 14, 1993. U2 perform in Marseille, France. A fan is pulled from the crowd(for some unknown reason) and is forced to stand beside speakers. He eventually becomes deaf and later sues the concert promoter. During the show , Bono calls Bill Carter in Sarajevo on the telephone and asks Carter to explain to the audience what is happening there.
U2 & Paul McCartney:the hot top debut - july 14, 2005. The Hot 100's top debut was a version of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by Paul McCartney with U2 at No. 48. The track was made available through Apple's iTunes music store shortly after the artists finished performing it at the Live 8 concert in London on July 2.
U2 set Album Chart record - July 14, 2005 - In what is almost certainly an all-time record, U2 currently have no less than eleven albums in the Irish Top 75, as compiled by IRMA. The unprecedented explosion in sales by the band comes in the wake of their similarly record-breaking three-night run at Croke Park, which saw them play to a total audience of around a quarter of a million, and last week's Live 8 appearance in Hyde Park. U2's current album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, which has already gone multi-platinum in Ireland, leads the charge at No. 4, and The Joshua Tree - voted the No. 1 Greatest Irish Album of All Time this year by Hotpress readers - follows at No. 12. Both of their Best Of... collections also feature in the Top 20, with...1980-1990 at No. 13 and...'1990-2000 at No. 19. The other chart placings are: All That You Can't Leave Behind (32); Achtung Baby (35); Rattle And Hum (43); Live: Under A Blood Red Sky (48); The Unforgettable Fire (53); Boy (63); and War (67). Of their entire recorded output to date, only October, Pop and Zooropa are outside the Top 75 cut-off. Meanwhile, they also have three titles in the Music Video Top 10, with Go Home: Live From Slane Castle at No. 1, The Best Of 1990-2000 at No. 6 and Rattle And Hum at No. 9.
U2 in Wisseloord studios - Hilversum - south-east of Amsterdam - July 14, 2005 - It was supposed to be a day off but Jacknife Lee was spotted with the band making their way to the Wisseloord Studios last week. Seems that on Thursday – supposed to be a rest day between the three Amsterdam shows - band and key crew members were holed up in the legendary Wisseloord studios in the city of Hilversum, south-east of Amsterdam. Also in the house were producer Garrett "Jacknife" Lee and strings arranger James Banbury whose previous credits include Snow Patrol, Aqualung, Joy Zipper, Katherine Jenkins and Kasabian. No confirmation as to what was going on inside Studios 1 and 3 until late into Thursday night but maybe there’s a clue in the band’s last visit to Wisseloord Studios. That was during the European leg of PopMart where they worked on a remix of a rather wonderful song called ‘Please’ - produced by Howie B and with strings arranged by Craig Armstrong. The track was subsequently released as a single in September 1997 - the fourth single from the album Pop.

JULY 13: Marquee Club / "Live Aid" / red shirt #7 / Bono flies to be with his father / U2´s album stolen or lost in France / 45th 'VERTIGO' show *'Welcome home U2'; 'Blessings, blessings...in the Port of Amsterdam'; Edge´unmistakable opening riff of Miracle Drug; opera at the end of SYCMIOYO; a song to Theo can Gogh and to victims of London´s bombings; Happy Birthday (belated) to Anton Corbijn, who was at the attendance!
"11 O´Clock Tick Tock" - july 13, 1980 / London, England - Marquee Club.
"Live Aid" - july 13, 1985. 5:20 pm GMT : Following an introduction by Jack Nicholson("And now, to keep with the international and global feeling that we have, direct from London, a group who's heart is in Dublin, Ireland, whose spirit is with the world, a group that's never had any problem saying how they feel: U2!"), U2 storm the stage at Live Aid in Wembley Stadium, London, with a set that includes "Sunday Bloody Sunday", " and a stunning ten-minute version of "Bad", along with parts of "Ruby Tuesday", "Walk on the Wild Side". During "Bad" Bono motions for a girl to be allowed on stage. Security has been specifically told to not let any fans on stage--they stall for approximately 5 minutes, while Adam, Larry, and The Edge play the same chords repeatedly. Eventually security relents, and "Holly, [who] came from Miami, Florida"(from the Lou Reed song "Walk on the Wild Side) is allowed to slow dance with Bono in front of 1.5 billion people around the world. After the stunning performance of "Bad", Bono leaves the stadium wondering if he's ruined the band reputation--in his mind the performance at Live Aid was a disaster as the band didn't even get a chance to perform "Pride(In the Name of Love)". However, Bono's simple gesture of dancing with a stranger is taken as one of the pinnacle moments of the show. U2's album sales triple over the next few months. U2 issue a press statement on their attendance at Live Aid: "U2 are involved in Live Aid because it's more than money, it's music...but it is also a demonstration to the politicians and the policy-makers that men, women and children will not walk by other men, women and children as they lie, bellies swollen, starving to death for the sake of a cup of grain and water. For the price of Star Wars[the US Strategic Defense Initiative], the MX missle offensive-defence budgets, the desert of Africa could be turned into fertile lands. The technology is with us. The technocrats are not. Are we part of a civilization that protects itself by investing in life...or investing in death?"
Sunday Bloody Sunday:

"Peace Together - july 13, 1993. "Peace Together" is released. The album contains cover versions of "Blur", "Pop Will Eat Itself", "Lou Reed" and "U2". The proceeds go towards helping children in Northern Ireland.

After tonight's concert in Cologne, Bono flies home to Dublin to be with his dad, Bob, who is hospitalized and seriously ill, according to media reports. Bono's brother Norman tells the Irish Mirror their 75-old father "is not in great shape." Bono is able to spend much of the weekend in Dublin before a Sunday concert in Munich.
"U2's upcoming album lost or stolen in France" - july 13, 2004. A CD containing songs from U2's upcoming album goes missing during a photo shoot at the Victorine studios in Nice, France. French authorities launch an immediate investigation by interviewing about 20 people were on hand during the photo shoot, but no one is sure if the CD is lost or was stolen. Edge tells U2.com: "A large slice of two years' work lifted via a piece of round plastic. It doesn't seem credible but that's what's just happened to us...and it was my CD." U2 manager Paul McGuinness voices his concern that the songs may reach the Internet: "The recording of this album has been going so well. The band is so excited about its release. It would be a shame if unfinished work fell into the wrong hands." The album isn't due for release for more than four months, although there's speculation that timetable will change if the songs are leaked online.
45th 'VERTIGO' show - July 13, 2005 - Amsterdam, Netherlands - ArenA - The Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers. 'Welcome home U2' / 'Blessings, blessings...in the Port of Amsterdam' / Edge´unmistakable opening riff of Miracle Drug / opera at the end of SYCMIOYO / a song to Theo can Gogh and to victims of London´s bombings / Happy Birthday (belated) to Anton Corbijn, who was at the attendance! An exceptionally loud crowd welcomes U2 to Amsterdam tonight. Bono again sings a bit of opera at the end of Sometimes... as he did in Paris. He dedicates Running to Stand Still to Dutch filmmaker Theo can Gogh, killed last year by a Muslim extremist, and to the victims of the recent London bombings. Before One, Bono leads the crowd in singing Happy Birthday to Anton Corbijn, who is at the show, even though his birthday was in late May. *'Welcome home U2': ...Apart from Dublin, Amsterdam is the only city on the European leg to get three shows and right from the off last night it was clear that the band retain a special place in their hearts for the Dutch....explain Bono¿s introduction to I Will Follow. 'Our first No.1 anywhere in the world... in this great, extraordinary land, Holland.'...No wonder, as Bono smiles, two and a half hours later, 'Welcome home U2!'...'I want to thank The Kaiser Chiefs and The Killers,' says the singer, as Edge heads to the keyboard for New Year's Day. 'Two great rock'n'roll bands.'...'We want to say so much tonight,' explains Bono, almost lost for words at times. 'Most of all we want to thank you for giving us a great life.' The Netherlands, he continues, is a 'place that still plays us on the radio, still wants to see us in your football stadiums' a place that still sees U2 as 'about the present.'...'Blessings, blessings... in the Port of Amsterdam.' adds Bono as City of Blinding Lights fades out and Edge begins picks out the unmistakeable opening riff of Miracle Drug which is dedicated, to great cheers, to 'the scientists, doctors, nurses - especially the nurses - that keep us well, that get us to the future.'...Running to Stand Still - have seemed to gain poignancy and potency in the days subsequent to the bombs in London last week. There is added relevance tonight as Holland has been gripped by the murder trial of another religious extremist and tonight Bono dedicates Running To Stand still to film-maker Theo van Gogh. 'We'd like to turn this song into a prayer, we'd like to remind the religious people, Jewish, Christian, Moslem, that we all come from Father Abraham, all three are Abrahamic , so this is a family feud, a family fight.. and it must stop.
"Happy Birthday" to Hollie; Bono sung opera over Edge´s guitar-SYCMIOYO; "Uno, dos, tres, Louis Quatorze"; again white balloons; a song for London! At the start of Miracle Drug, Bono leads the crowd in Happy Birthday for Edge's daughter Hollie, who's at the show for her 21st birthday. As Sometimes You Can't... ends, Bono tells a story about visiting Paris with his dad 10 years ago, and how after a night of drink, Bob put Bono 'to bed like a baby' and Bob stayed awake singing opera. Bono ends the song by singing opera over Edge's guitar. Bono brings a female fan on stage to dance at the end of One. * 'Hear Him Singing Opera': Another emotional night as Parisians rock the Stade de France....'Who's the man?' asks Bono of Edge, during his solo, and the crowd roars appreciation. 'See the world in Black and Blue/ Stade de France right in front of you' he extemporises during Beautiful Day, before the band transpose the track into a George Harrison classic. 'Here Comes The Sun, Little Darlin', Here comes The Sun, It's alright...' Miracle Drug is another cause for celebration tonight with Bono inviting everyone to sing Happy Birthday to godchild Holly - 21 tonight. And after a raucous English rendition - 'En Francais!' - an equally raucous French interpretation. 'Bon Anniversaire!' As I drifted to sleep I could hear him singing opera.' ...'Sing this for the city of London,' he requests as the band play in Running To Stand Still. A huge cheer goes up. 'This song we are turning into a prayer. The prayer is that we do not turn into a monster in order to defeat a monster.'...There were more special effects during Pride - when this very creative audience started throwing up hundreds of white ballons again - and also With Or Without You, when one lucky girl got to come out and dance with the singer.... The stage. Balloons during Pride. Screens on Yahweh. Zoo Station. *"Uno, dos tres, Louis Qutorze!": Bono counts down: 'Uno, dos, tres, Louis Quatorze!' Sunday Bloody Sunday is dedicated to one of Bono's 'heroes', football player Zinedine Zidane, who is in the audience. Bono is in a theatrical mood, starts posing and singing on his back on the main stage very early on in the set. At the end of Sometimes, Bono tells the story of his dad drinking him under the table in Paris, and putting him to bed. He says he fell asleep listening to his dad singing opera. Bono then sings part of 'Torna a Surriento' (Return to Sorrento), made famous by Mario Lanza. Just before Miracle Drug, Bono sings Happy Birthday for his god daugther, the Edge's daughter Holly , who turns 21 that night. Then he makes the crowd sing it in French." JULY 9: Naples / Stochkolm / 43rd VERTIGO show: white balloon fest, Mexican waves, Edge being strangled playfully by Bono, his arms around the guitarists neck as Edge played, 'Sexy people.. Pareeee..', 'Beautiful Day for Africa'!
"ZOOTV-Zooropa" tour - july 9, 1993. U2 perform in Naples, Italy at Stadio San Paulo.
"Elevation" tour - july 09, 2001 / Stockholm, Sweden - Globe - Stereophonics. Edge this night wears red shirt #7.
43rd 'VERTIGO' show - july 9, 2005 - Paris, France - Stade de France - Starsailor, Snow Patrol. White balloon fest / Mexican waves / Edge being strangled playfully by Bono, his arms around the guitarists neck as Edge played / 'Sexy people.. Pareeee..' / 'Beautiful Day for Africa' ! Wow! What an audience in Paris tonight. The French are wild! From the opening Mexican waves to the spontaneous white balloon fest and the deafening singing along, this was a show that took off ..and just kept rising.... The band on stage, here. Just one of a clutch of songs that Bono borrowed from during a wild show in Paris last night. It was a special night in Paris last night. Maybe it was because Bono spoke so often in French. Maybe it was because it was the first U2 show since the G8 meetings - and a vindication of pressure put on western governments by people across the world on behalf of Africa. Maybe because it was France and the band spend a lot of time in this country when they are not working. Maybe it was because Europe is still reeling from the bombs in London on Thursday... and a sense of communal hope is all the more precious....The 80,000 strong crowd were pumping from the off....Vertigo, I Will Follow and Electric Co sent everyone into a paroxysm of joy. 'I can see for miles and miles and miles..' adlibbed Bono and what he could see was French people giving it everything. The track finished with Edge being strangled playfully by Bono, his arms around the guitarists neck as Edge played and Bono sang. 'Sexy people.. Pareeee..'...during Beautiful Day, and changed the lyrics to add that yesterday, Friday, had been a 'Beautiful Day for Africa' - to great applause. A week after debuting the number with Paul McCartney before several billion people, the band finished Beautiful Day with Sgt Pepper: 'Hope you will enjoy the show..'...And with that Edge's guitar broke into Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and 80,000 Parisians accepted Bono's invitation to 'take us to church now.' ...As Edge played the haunting piano chords and Bono blew into his harmonica, suddenly the whole dark night was burning with lighters and mobiles. 'That's beautiful!' said Bono, so inspired that he took the track off into a hymn at the end, breaking into Amazing Grace as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights began scrolling up the back of the stage. The applause and cheering from the audience was a tonic. 'I once was lost, but now I see..'...All Because Of You was followed by the psalm-like Yahweh and the final honours went to another rendition of Vertigo. U2 on screen, here.
"Greg Carroll´s funeral" - july 8, 1986. Greg Carroll is buried at Kai-lwi Marae in New Zealand. Bono and Larry attend the funeral with Ali and Ann Acherson. U2 crew members Joe O'Herlihy and Steve Iredale are also present. Bono reads a poem during the service and later, at the traditional, 'last supper', "Knocking on Heaven's Door" and "Let it Be". When he returns to Dublin he writes the song "One Tree Hill" for Carroll. Months later in an interview with David Breskin, Bono recalled the funeral, "[It] was beyond belief. He was buried in his tribal homeland, as a Maori, by the chiefs and elders. And there was a three-day and three-night wake and your head would be completely turned around. And ours were, again and again."
"The Joshua Tree" tour - july 8, 1987. U2 perform in Brussels, Belgium at Vorst Nationaal. U2 play a small date inbetween nine stadium shows. The show is only 8,000 people, but results in a fantastic atmosphere. Bono dedicates "Bad" to his friend Greg Carroll who was buried in New Zealand one year ago. "This is a song we filmed in this building, maybe two years ago...and the camera recorded a very special concert. But the star of the camera was not the band. The star of the camera was a guy called Greg Carroll. He used to just stand there. On this day last year, a few of us arrived in New Zealand, in Wanagnui. Greg Carroll was a member of the Maori tribe, and his tribe sent him off...forever. We were very proud to be guests at the burying of Greg Carroll this time last year, and we play this song for Greg Carroll this year..." Support is "In Tua Nua".
