Transcription of Jeffrey Sachs interview on Radio National (Australia) - October 13, 2005 - Professor Jeffrey Sachs speaks on the end of poverty - Reporter: Mark Colvin - MARK COLVIN: And Ghana is just one of the African countries struggling to drag itself out of the poverty trap. One of the people most responsible for publicising aid proposals that could give Africans new prosperity is in Australia at the moment. Professor Jeffrey Sachs has been described as the world's most famous economist. He's certainly the one best-known to the MTV generation, through his travels with U2's Bono and the film star Angelina Jolie. But his book The End of Poverty: How We Can Make It Happen In Our Lifetime has also been a big seller in many countries. Jeffrey Sachs is giving an address to the Lowy Institute tonight in which he'll lay out his vision for how sustained financial intervention can turn sick economies around. But when I spoke to him this afternoon, we talked first about the worries that many people have about pumping big money into countries that have corrupt and inefficient governments. abc
