MAY 9: 'you wanna drink with me?' / Macnass and MacPhisto première / great 'Miami' / playing a Les Paul / U2 shoots a DVD in Chicago - 18th VERTIGO show!

"Boy" tour - may 9, 1981 - Memphis / Tennessee at Poets.

"The Joshua Tree" tour - may 9, 1987. U2 perform in Hartford, Connecticut at the Civic Center. "I Still Haven´t Found What I´m Looking For" is played after "Trip Through Your Wires." Support is "Lone Justice".

may 9 1992 - Gent / Belgium - Flanders Expo. The day before his 32nd birthday, Bono strolls over the catwalk and picks up a girl from the crowd "You wanna drink with me? Hell, it´s my birthday!" She operates the camcorder and stays on the mini-stage for a couple of songs. At the end of "Sattelite of Love", Bono says to her,."I want you for my birthday..." Support is B.P. Fallon and "Fatima Mansions".

"ZOOTV - Zooropa" tour - may 9, 1993 - Rotterdam / Holland - Feyenoord Stadium - A theatre group called Macnass from Galway, Ireland, are hired for the tour, to perform a play before the support acts. They premiered tonight. Another premiere, is Bono´s new-ego in a gold lame suit; his face painted white with red lipstick, his hair combed-back and supporting red devil horns. As Bono said, later: "MacPhisto is The Fly when he´s old and fat and playing Las Vegas".

"POPMart" tour - may 9, 1997 - Tempe / AZ - Sun Devil Stadium - The band was phenomenal. One of the best moments in the concert was the song "Please." U2 played this so passionate and, as with many songs, changed it slightly for a more full effect. The Edge's guitar sound was fantastic, it made this song and "Miami" better than on the album."Sunday Bloody Sunday" in the middle of "Please" was only the familiar drum opening, at which the crowd went crazy. "With or Without You" brought back memories of concerts past when Bono sang a few verses of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." Bono described "Staring at the Sun" as the "sunshine song." The show was incredible, despite the new image and the stage setup and the hype, U2 still give aperformance with the same passion that they were known for in the 80¿. And musically, probably better. "

"Bono and Paul" - may 9, 1998. Bono and Paul McGuinness attend a lecture given by filmmaker Martin Scorcese.

"Elevation" tour - may 9, 2001 - Milwaukee / WI - Bradley Center - The best was when the Edge joined Bono at the very bottom of the heart. Facing each other, up close like two buskers on the subway platform, they played "In a Little While" in honor of Ramones leader Joey Ramone, who died recently. And their stripped-down "Desire," just vocals, guitar and a little harmonica at the end, was truly memorable. The band only played one song each off the "Zooropa" and "Pop" albums, instead focusing on new songs and classic hits from the 1980s. No complaints were heard from the audience, who sang along lustily to songs like "(Pride) In the Name of Love." For a guy who turns 41 today, Bono is still mesmerizing as a lead singer."I'd like to introduce the members of the band." As each band member strode down the walkway to the cacophonous cheers of the crowd, Bono gave each a hug. "...Wearing the number 13 shirt this evening in honor of another old dog. Playing a Les Paul when he could be flying the space shuttle. Will you welcome please, on lead guitar and vocals, even his mother calls him The Edge". Edge wears this night red shirt#13.

U2 shoots a DVD in Chicago - may 9, 2005. Tonight's Vertigo Tour show in Chicago marks the first of a two-night video shoot for a planned DVD release. The show is, by almost all accounts, better than two nights ago in Chicago. A special moment occurs late in the show when Bono brings a female fan on stage to play guitar. The girl had been holding a sign asking for the chance, and when given it, she chooses to play "Party Girl", a song which hasn't been performed yet this tour. The version is shaky at best, but -- with the film crew rolling again the following night -- the same girl, Laura, is brought on stage a second time and together she and the band do a much better version of the song. 18th 'VERTIGO' show - may 9, 2005 - Chicago, IL - United Center - Kings of Leon. DVD filmed / "Party Girl" debuts" / Keanu Reeves was there / Jena danced with Bono! I named my son Edge. Rocko, a member of U2's road crew, takes the stage before U2 and tells the crowd tonight's show is being filmed for a DVD, saying it will be a 'magical' show. Bono brings a young girl (Jena-6 years old) on stage during 'Into the Heart.' Later, he brings a female fan on stage to play guitar on 'Party Girl.' She struggles a bit, but gets through with encouragement from Bono and an enthusiastic crowd. It's the first time 'Party Girl' is played this tour, and only the fourth time since the Zoo TV tour. He is surprised at her height and wonders how Chicago grows them so tall and beautiful. Gloria tells Bono that she wants to play Party Girl and he helps her along. Meanwhile on stage, The Edge insists that Adam play bass but Adam declines. They had already switched instruments for 40. The Edge trying to fumble with the bass once again asks Adam to play bass. Larry sorts out the chaos by pointing out that Bono and Gloria are almost done anyway. The Edge seems content with that assessment....The Edge lingered all night on notes, playing extended versions of his parts (An Cat Dubh and others). He was chopping at the Joshua tree again. They were very interactive with the crowd, talking, dancing, taking a number of items up on stage including an Irish flag and a t-shirt from a guy that said "I named my son Edge" or something!
