"Bono, O'Neill go public with disagreements over African aid" - may 27, 2002. Almost a week into their joint tour of Africa, Bono and U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill openly speak of their differences over African aid. After visiting a poorly equipped school and a village water well in Uganda today, O'Neill questions how agencies spent the $300 million they received in aid last year and why many Ugandans don't have clean water when new wells could be built for all residents for roughly $25 million. Bono disagrees, telling reporters the school and water well issues are examples of why more aid is needed. "If the secretary can't see that," he says, "we're going to have to get him a pair of glasses and a new set of ears."

"Bono sings in Modena, again" - may 27, 2003. Bono appears at the Pavarotti and Friends concert in Modena, Italy and performs two songs without any help from the rest of U2. His performance includes "One" with an orchestra backing, and he later sings "Ave Maria" with Pavarotti. But Bono has written new lyrics that reflect the ongoing situation in the Middle East: "Strength is not without humility / It's weakness, an untreatable disease / And war is always the choice / Of the chosen who will not have to fight." The concert raises an estimated £1 million pounds for Iraqi war refugees. It's Bono's second performance at Pavarotti's concert -- he performed with Edge and Brian Eno during the 1995 concert.
