Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Beautiful Day - Blackbird, Vertigo, One - Unchained Melody * 40th 'VERTIGO' show: "Sgt Peppers"+"Beautiful Day" / delay cause Live8 / One is dedicated to Herbert Grönemeyer!

"October" tour - july 2, 1982. U2 perform in Roskilde, Denmark at the Festival Grounds, as part of the annual "Roskilde Festival". During the show, Bono climbs the fence that separates the crowd and stage, but is hindered from going farther by a think roll of barbed wire. During "Out of Control", Bono jumps onto the press platform and dances with a female journalist. The show is recorded and later shown on Dutch TV.

"War" tour - july 2, 1983. U2 perform in Torhout, Beligium at the Festival Grounds, as part of the Torhout/Werchter Double Festival. Other bands of note that perform are "The Eurythmics", "Simple Minds", Peter Gabriel, and Van Morrison. Bono comments that last year's concert was the first time that he held the white flag and that the band hasn't let that ideal go. Bono announces The Edge's wedding to Aislinn O'Sullivan, "I'm not very good in making speeches. I'm going to have to make a speech at Edge's wedding next week."

"ZOOTV-Zooropa" tour - july 2, 1993. U2 perform in Verona, Italy. Pearl Jam supports.

"POPTART" - july 2, 1997. Kellogg's(a US breakfast cereal company) threatens to sue U2/Principle Management over the use of the term "POPTART". U2 withdraws sales of shirts with the word 'POPTART'.

"POPMart" tour - july 2, 1997. U2 perform in Boston, Massachusetts. U2 finish the first leg of their PopMart tour in Boston, their home-away-from-home. It's a special night, as the band is sipping champagne as they descend from the lemon before "Discotheque." During Edge's karaoke version of "Suspicious Minds," the guys from Fun Lovin' Criminals, who have opened up most of the shows during this leg of the tour, come on-stage to sing and "stalk" Edge, who laughs heartily at their efforts. And as it begins to rain during the encore, Bono remains on-stage after the show and begins a solo cover of the Beatles' "Rain" -- slowly, the others return to the stage and eventually the band plays a full rendition of the song before finally calling it a night.

U2's interviews before Live8 (Jo Whiley and MTV) - July 2 - London - Hyde Park - 11.30am....U2 embark on a rapid-fire series of interviews with global media outlets. It's all surprisingly well organised: What about the critics, asks Whiley, those who say Live 8 won't change anything? 'But our audience really can, because they are the people who put in and out of office the politicians who really will have to change everything. People said the same thing about the first Live Aid, adds Edge. 'They said it won't make any difference and you know, in terms of changing Africa, it made a small difference, but a significant difference. But I think if you just look at the impact that concert, the first Live Aid, had on people's perception of justice issues, even the fact that Gordon Brown and Tony Blair both saw that first concert and we have now got to the point where it's just a given that it's moved on now. It's not about charity it's about justice' and I think if we can look back in another 20 years we will be seeing the same kind of quantum shift.' 11.40. A quick hop fifty metres or so and we are at the MTV production suite in a nearby portacabin. The band are on camera at one end of the room while your correspondent is squashed up at the other, out of earshot unfortunately - but not before we had managed a couple of snaps. ... 2pm: It's two o'clock in London and we welcome the world to Live 8,' booms the voice of TV presenter Jonathan Ross. ... A 200,000 strong crowd explodes into life as the five musicians burst into a sparkling rendition of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. 'It was twenty years ago today...' Minutes earlier Edge had joked. 'We don't want to be the band to murder Sgt Pepper!' And they weren't.... 3.30. U2 are on their way to Vienna but the African Childrens Choir have only just arrived - and discovered that backstage at Live 8 the ice-cream is free. Result! from 'It Was Twenty Years Ago Today...'
